Destination of the month: Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Population: around 500. Views: Lake Superior in every direction. Things to do: more than you'd expect in a town of 500.

Bayfield is the jump-off point for the Apostle Islands — 21 islands on the largest freshwater lake in the world. You can kayak the sea caves, take a boat tour, or just set up at a campground a mile from town and watch the water for a while. There are orchards, a great food scene for a small town, and a music venue (Big Top Chautauqua) that's genuinely worth planning around.

It's about 4 hours from the Twin Cities. Most people have never been. That's exactly why it's worth going.

Three days is genuinely enough time to do something worth talking about.

Friday afternoon you leave. Saturday you're fully "there." Sunday you explore. Monday morning you drive home with your cup refilled.

That's it. That's the whole formula.

Our own region has more long-weekend-worthy destinations than most people realize. A lake you've never fished. A state park you've driven past a hundred times. A town two hours away that you keep meaning to check out.

🚐 What's your Memorial Day weekend camping tradition?

It's such a big milestone for RV life:

✔️ Long weekend
✔️ Full tank.
✔️ The unofficial-official start of summer camping

OK, the nights might be a bit chilly and the swimming is ... refreshing ... but Memorial Day weekend has that certain something. The whole summer stretches out ahead, and it all starts now.

A 3-day weekend hits different when you have an RV. Here's one we keep coming back to:

Day 1: Head northeast from the Twin Cities toward Duluth. Stop at the Aerial Lift Bridge, grab a lakeside lunch, drive up the shore a bit. Camp near Two Harbors.

Day 2: Drive Highway 61 north. Stop at Gooseberry Falls — worth every minute. Push up to Grand Marais for dinner and a fire on the water.

Day 3: Slow morning. Drive home the long way.

Some state parks around here book up almost the minute reservations open.

These three are perennial favorites for a reason:

🌲 Gooseberry Falls State Park (MN) — five waterfalls, Lake Superior right there, and trails that are genuinely hard to leave.

🌲 Itasca State Park (MN) — 33,000 acres, old-growth pines, and the headwaters of the Mississippi River. You can literally wade across it.

🌲 Devil's Lake State Park (WI) — bluffs, a beautiful lake, and over 400 campsites, so your odds are good.

All three have solid RV hookups. All three fill up fast.
