Another classic getting ready to hit the road! Our friend and customer Pete always dreamed of having a Willys Gasser. But not just any fiberglass replica would do, he wanted something special. 100% steel. So he spent roughly 40 years collecting parts and pieces in hopes to one day drive his dream car.
Pete’s goal wasn’t to have some super prefect show car with flashy paint, or a monstrous, high horsepower racecar. He wanted a car that could drive cross country and back, rain or shine!
Aside from the solid original front sheet metal, the car overall was in pretty rough shape. The body needed some serious rust repair to make the car road worthy, along with some custom fabrication to fit the new chassis and drivetrain. Once all the metalwork and rust repair was completed the body was sealed inside, outside, and underneath to keep everything protected from the elements.
Powering this gasser is an old school 331ci DeSoto Hemi, topped with a Carter carburetor and backed by a cruising-friendly GM 700R4 transmission. Be Cool, Inc. built a custom cooling module to keep the Hemi running cool, and a Vintage Air system was installed to cool the passengers. The new chassis is fitted with a Ford 9in rear axle, Wilwood Disc Brakes brakes, and plenty of parts from Speedway Motors. Other cool parts include a IDIDIT steering column, AutoMeter Products, Inc. gauges, and an American Autowire harness.
As the project has been coming closer to completion Pete got to take the car to Autorama - World of Wheels - Cavalcade of Customs Detroit Autorama, where it was part of the Autorama Extreme show in the basement, where the car received some great reaction and Pete got to enjoy a great weekend hanging out and sharing his story.
Any good project is never done, and the Willys is no exception. Pete wants have his own hand in the build and plans to do more to the car once he gets it home, including finishing the interior and building a custom trailer to pull on cross country road trips (yes, the car even has a trailer hitch!)
Shoutout to Pete and his ALL STEEL 1940 Willys Gasser. We hope he enjoys driving it as much as we enjoyed putting it together!
