Comprised of 30 greater Sacramento area museums working in partnership with the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, the mission of the Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) is to raise awareness of local museums by giving the community the opportunity to discover California’s fine art, history, science and wildlife treasures. SAM achieves its mission through implementing cooperative promotions and developing strategic marketing alliances, by encouraging sharing of knowledge and resources among its partner institutions.

Celebrate and learn about Día de los Mu***os with SAM museums!

A number of Sacramento Area Museums (SAM) are offering ways for the community to explore, experience, and learn more about Día de los Mu***os, or Day of the Dead. Held on November 1 and 2, the traditional Mexican cultural celebration honors and welcomes the souls of loved ones who have passed away. Experience a journey through life, love, and death with "Sendero de las Almas Luminosas (Path of the Luminous Souls)," a new experience at the California Museum featuring a path of altars illuminating spaces throughout the Museum. 🕯️

This Día de los Mu***os display consists of altars placed within California Museum signature exhibits, each reflecting that exhibit’s theme. Grab a map from the Museum lobby and collect a stamp at each altar to receive a Día-themed gift once you've completed the tour! 🤩

Now on View at the California Museum: “Help Wanted / Leave Now: ‘Operation Wetback’ & the Revolving Door of Mass Deportation,” presented in both English and Spanish.

For over a century, the story of labor in the United States has been a cycle of "Help Wanted" and "Leave Now.” Anchored in the 1950s deportation campaign “Operation Wetback,” this first-of-its-kind exhibition explores how generations of Mexican workers were recruited to sustain U.S. industry, only to face mass expulsion during times of economic anxiety and political scapegoating.

Through firsthand accounts, rare photographs, historical artifacts, and interactive elements, the exhibit confronts difficult truths while honoring the individuals whose labor has underpinned American economic growth.
