Wendall Berry, a true American hero, has passed. My main memory of Wendall B was when I was seated next to him at an event in Washington DC. I didn’t know who he was, and asked him about himself. I told him I was a beekeeper, he was immediately interested. He also said he was from Carrollton, KY. I told him I once lived in Carrollton, TX. I was immediately interested in his story; he was just so inherently interesting. I remember asking him why he was in town. He said he was “getting an award.” It turns out he had just received the National Humanities Medal from Obama. Alice Waters came up to us and tried to take over the conversation, but Wendall politely greeted her and returned his focus to our conversation about bees and honey. A few weeks later I sent him a jar of Round Rock Honey, and he sent me back a short note saying he appreciated it, and that he ate it all. Peace on him; RIP.

This is a very interesting case that every beekeeper should at least be aware of. Typically the precedent(s) set in these sorts of decisions shape beekeeping in every other state for years to come. Hives for Heroes Mentor Alex Urban’s fight to responsibly keep two honey bee colonies has reached the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.

And when the implications of his case grew beyond his own backyard, Hives for Heroes stood with him.

Alongside the West Virginia Beekeepers Association, Hives for Heroes submitted an amicus brief in support of Alex’s case and responsible beekeeping across the state.

Because this is bigger than two hives.

It’s about what place responsible beekeeping should have in our communities and how we balance education, accountability and reasonable standards without defaulting to blanket prohibition.

Two hives started this case. What happens next could shape beekeeping in West Virginia for years to come.
