Being on your side isn’t so bad unless you are in a car and on the edge of an embankment that drops straight down 1,000+ feet. This driver was lucky to escape without injury this morning on Tioga Pass (SR 120W). We would like to take this time to remind people to watch your downhill speed and maintain control of your vehicle at all times. This is the fourth crash within two weeks that have occurred on either Tioga Pass or Sonora Pass (SR108) where people have lost their breaking power, or lost control of their vehicle due to speed. Last week on Sonora Pass two individuals jumped out of their moving vehicle because they feared it would go over the edge. The vehicle ended up going into the hillside and the driver and his passenger had minor injuries. Please travel safely.

Our instructors, in all our programs, frequently FREQUENTLY state this simple principle " look where you want to go NOT where you don't want to go". If we could discuss with this young driver, bet you a quarter of a dollar, that he was going where he was looking - just looking at the wrong thing.

As the prior post notes, often teaching a new driver how to drive requires teaching them about the car and sometimes how to drive a manual transmission. We enjoyed this video about how to start and drive a 1928 Model A Ford. Double clutching and why, lots of stuff. Would be great fun to have a young driver watch this and explain the questions he or she might have. One of our instructors remembers a story about his dad, who double clutched everything thing - brought back good memories. Enjoy

There are lots of folks who want to learn to driver a manual transmission. A worthy goal in our view. This is a pretty good example of several techniques especially if your going to teach a young person. Sorry about the commercials, but its a good video and worth "wading" through them.

This is a good video and explains Front Wheel Drive ( FWD), Rear (RWD) and All (AWD) very nicely. Now its in the context of being on the track, so that may well not apply but understanding how these systems work, is important especially for a new driver, and for that person ( often a parent ), who is serving as the Lead Driving Instructor for their child.
