Some shops will repair your vehicle the fastest and cheapest way possible because they are pressured and influenced to do by insurance companies.

Auto Insurance coverages are not keeping up with the times. Sadly, the State does not offer adequate insurance regulation or oversight to an area where folks are getting short changed daily — by their insurance COVERAGE.

Many folks think because they have insurance that insurance “pays for everything”. Sure they will pay based off the fine print of your policy, but that does not necessarily mean your policy matches your repair needs or even your vehicle. Vehicle engineering is advancing faster than anyone can keep up — including your insurance.

Advanced vehicle electronics require almost every vehicle now to undergo pre and post scans. A simple bumper job may require special paint that is radar compliant paint so your blind spot monitors and safety features work as designed. Many advanced safety features require recalibration just by removing or replacing a bumper. Even some door window switches need reprogramming. Etc.

Sounds ridiculous right ? It is . But that is where auto repair has evolved. Make sure your auto insurance is keeping up with the times and covers YOUR VEHICLES SPECIFIC needs and functions.

So you call your insurance company to make a claim. As if the informal automated phone service wasn’t enough; many insurance companies started using “AI” to write your estimates. As if that’s going to be thorough or even reasonable for the customers that work hard to pay these unaffordable insurance premiums. Nope , just another tool to delay claims and fight paying the customer what they deserve.

And just think, after your insurance company gives you that neglectful automated treatment and garbage estimate , they have the nerve to refer you to their “contracted” preferred shop.

As if somehow they can be trusted to finish the process when you have been dismissed every step thus far.

Take a deep breath and take control. Call a shop that is independent that works for you , not your insurance company.

At DM Collision we are an independent repair shop. This means no contract exists between the shop and the insurance carrier . It has been brought to my attention by customers on numerous occasions, including today that State Farm insurance is actively telling claimants that they cannot bring their vehicle to a shop if it is not “on their list”. (Many shops experience this issue.)

The only thing that being on State Farm’s “list” means Is the shop is under contract with State Farm. Literally.

Not only is this false this is against New York regulations. And New York regulations are in place to protect.

In such instances where you feel your insurance company has steered you or pressured you , whether it is State Farm or any insurance company please feel free to contact the New York State Department of financial services and file a complaint. This can be done online. Until further notice my shop will assist in filing complaints for free . And my Wi-Fi will be available to any customer who needs to file a complaint.

Stand up for your rights and stop accepting anything less than what you deserve and pay.

You have the right to choose your repair shop in New York State.

Common experience when reporting a claim.

So you are in an accident and contact your insurance to file a claim. You mention the shop of your choice and your insurance says “I’m sorry they aren’t on our list”. And the insurance then tries to push you to their “preferred shop.”

Let’s break this down and why it should be important to you.

1. The first thing is “steering” by insurance companies is illegal in NYS. Starting the process off by an illegal approach by your insurance company should tell you right then you deserve better.

2. Telling a clamaint that any shop is “not on their list” presents itself as a bad thing when in all actuality it is a good thing.

“Not on their list” means “not under contract with”. And No shop needs to be under contract with any insurance company to work on your vehicle. Stating “ not on our list” to any claimant implies that the shop they’re referring to is somehow non liscened or that your insurance company will not work with them. This is totally misleading and totally false. And this is deliberately approached this way as a deceptive tactic by numerous insurance companies.

3. “Preferred Shop” means “under contract with”

The way these typical contracts work is that an insurance company promises to send a shop a certain volume of work, and they promise to refer a certain number of claimants in exchange for the shop meeting the terms of their contract

Were you the customer made aware that there was a contract between this recommended shop and your insurance company? Were you made aware of the details of the contract and how it may or may not pertain to your claim and your vehicle and your repair? Well why not if it’s to benefit you the customer? Wouldn’t that be customer satisfaction?

And who are these “preferred shops “ preferred by anyway? Seriously, who “prefers” them? Don’t be misled. They are preferred by the insurance company. That’s why they are called preferred shops and the reason they are preferred is because of the contract details that are never made known to you the customer.

some of the most common details of these contracts are:

Typical contracts hold it against the shop for replacing parts and reward them for repairing parts

Typical contracts limit what labor operations can and cant be billed

Typical contracts limit what materials can and cannot be billed and how much

Typical contracts are used as leverage against the shop. Meaning , if the shops ratios and percentages are not kept within the margins of the insurance company satisfaction, they threaten to pull the contract and give it to another local shop in the area

This is just scratching the surface . You the customer and claimant have the right to choose your repair shop in New York State. Do not allow any insurance company to mislead you or manipulate you or steer you illegally to their contracted shop. Choose the shop of your choice and YOU make that decision.

And if you feel your insurance company lied to you and started off on the wrong foot to steer you illegally , please contact the New York State Department of financial services and also your local assemblyman/ assemblywoman.

Cold Hard Truth when choosing an insurance policy and carrier.

If you are buying healthcare insurance for your family you select your policy. Bronze , Silver, Gold. You evaluate, and YOU choose the plan with $100 co-pay, would you go to your doctor and expect the co-pay to be $20?

If you go to a fast food restaurant and you order a fast food value burger, would you expect a Delmonico in the bag?

Whens the last time you went to the supermarket and the cashier threw in a free bottle of wine, pork chops, and lobster tails ?

No.

Likewise , when you choose an auto insurance carrier and policy that has a $500 deductible with aftermarket parts that meet no certification or standards do you expect
Your insurance company to throw in upgraded parts for free? Or waive your deductible?

YOUR INSURANCE WILL ONLY PAY BASED ON THE POLICY AND LIMITS YOU CHOSE.

Insurance companies don’t just pay everything you want. And it is never a repair shops role to perform free labor and parts because your policy does not cover it and you don’t want to pay it .

This is why it is important to make sure your insurance policy is good for YOU and has the coverage that YOU need and YOU want . Make sure you understand the pros and cons to having rental coverage. Make sure you understand the difference between OEM and aftermarket and LKQ parts. Ask about OEM parts riders . Do not just agree with whatever your agent or broker says or whatever is cheaper. They get paid a commission make them explain it to you.

Cheap today, costs tomorrow .
