The Dos and Don’ts of Engine Oil for Your Air-Cooled Engine, Part 6 🛢️

We’re wrapping up the series! In this final episode, we’re talking brands: what we run here at The Seward Speed Shop, plus other quality options that are easy to get your hands on.

Don’t just take our word for it, do your own research. We point you toward some of the best resources out there, if you want to go deep on the science.

This series has been a labor of love, and we’re not done. Drop your questions in the comments and we’ll do our best to answer every single one. 👇

DOs and Don’ts, part 5. First DO: get your viscosity right.

Wrong viscosity and your air-cooled engine is working against you before it even warms up. Here’s what to actually run and why it matters more than the brand on the bottle.

Happy place found. 🚗💨 Thanks to Stateline Volksfolks VW Club for keeping the VW scene alive out here, and to the Chicago Vocho’s for making the trip to Rockford. Good times, good people.

Last DON’T in the series, and it might be the sneakiest mistake yet.”

Video 4. The final don’t.

This one’s for the DIYers who like to get creative under the hood. Feels like you’re doing your engine a favor. You’re probably not.

Adam breaks down why this “upgrade” usually backfires, and what to do instead.

This one’s gonna ruffle some feathers. Hear us out. 🦸🏻

Video 3 in our oil series. This one’s a hot take.

There’s a popular oil choice in the air-cooled world that people swear by. Higher zinc, tougher additive package. Sounds like a no-brainer.

It’s not. Adam breaks down what you’re actually trading off when you make the switch.

Any oil is better than no oil. But if you want your engine to actually perform?
These 2 “don’ts” matter.

Video 2 in our oil series: the don’ts that separate “it runs” from “it runs right.”

We’re not here to make you paranoid about oil. Something in the crankcase beats nothing every time. But if you’ve got the choice (and you usually do), these two mistakes are quietly costing you performance in an air-cooled engine.

Adam breaks down both in the video. Skip ‘em and you’re leaving power (and engine life) on the table.

Part 3 drops soon 👇

This is what’s living in Adam’s head 24/7.

That said, Gold Digger’s story is getting a rest for now and we want to hear from you.

Happy 4th from the Kottke family!

Grateful for the freedom to run engines, run a business, and raise our kids in a country worth fighting for.
Salute to the ones who built it, the ones keeping it running, and the ones we're raising to carry it forward.

THE FORMULA: TORQUE @ 5250 RPM + (HP ÷ 2), DIVIDED BY CC’S.
THIS IS GOLD DIGGER’S ANSWER.

Final pull. 228hp. 🔧
Gold Digger was built to a formula 🦸🏻 torque at 5250 RPM plus max horsepower divided by 2, all divided by cc’s, running on Evo 10 fuel.

That’s not an easy number to chase. It rewards an engine that makes real, usable power across the curve - not just a peak number.

This flat-four was built for exactly that math.
