Skipping the title check. A salvage or rebuilt title can drop resale value by 40% and make financing a lot tougher.

Ignoring service history. A cared-for SUV at 90k miles beats a neglected one at 50k every time.

Test driving only on flat roads. Highway speeds and hills are where the hidden issues finally show up.

Before you call us about that warning light, three quick checks worth trying first.

Most of the time, the fix is simpler than the dashboard makes it look.

Check your gas cap. A loose or cracked cap is one of the most common reasons a check engine light comes on. Tighten it until it clicks, drive a bit, and see if the light clears on its own.

Check your tire pressure. When the temperature swings, like it does through an Illinois fall, your tire pressure light can trip overnight. A quick top-off at the right PSI often turns it right back off.

Check your battery terminals. If your car is slow to start or the electronics act up, look for corrosion or a loose connection at the battery. A clean, tight terminal solves more problems than people expect.

None of this replaces a real diagnosis. But it saves you a trip when the answer was something you could handle in your own driveway.

Here's a number that keeps a lot of people from even trying: 700.

That's the credit score most buyers assume they need before they can get approved for a car loan.

The real cutoff is a lot lower than that.

A big share of used car financing goes to buyers in the 501 to 660 range, and lenders approve people in the 580 to 620 range all the time.
