Batteries have a sense of timing.
They pick the first cold morning to quit.

NHTSA puts it plainly: when the temperature drops, so does battery power. And a cold engine needs more of it to start.

The National Weather Service puts the normal first freeze at O'Hare on October 19.

Winter tires or all-season? It depends on how and where you drive.

All-season tires handle mild weather fine.

Once it stays below about 45 degrees, the rubber in an all-season stiffens and grip drops.

If you are on Will County roads before the plows are, a dedicated winter set makes sense.

If you wait out the bad days, all-seasons may be all you need.

Cold morning. Tire light on the dash.

Tire pressure drops when the temperature does, so this is the time of year that light starts showing up.

NHTSA says to check all four tires and the spare at least once a month.
Check them cold, after the car has sat for at least three hours.
The right number is on the sticker inside the driver's door.

Tread counts too. NHTSA says a tire is due for replacement at 2/32 of an inch.

Light still on after you fill up? One tire keeps going low?

The 4WD light is on, something binds in tight turns, or there is a whine from the back that was not there last month.

Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive systems ask for very little until they are neglected. Zabor Automotive diagnoses 4WD and AWD systems, front and rear differentials, and transfer cases, and keeps them on schedule: differential and transfer case fluid service at the interval your manufacturer calls for, and a plain answer on what needs doing now and what can wait.

Catch it early and it is a fluid service. Ignore it and it is a much bigger job. We would rather see you for the first one.

We all know the old adage: when the cat’s away, the mice will play.
You call it your vehicle. A little pest might call it home.

Well, in this case, our little tenant decided to do some interior renovations and, in the process, demolished some of the wiring in our customer’s car.

Enter Rob, the Rodent Repair Master. (We’re still working on his official title. Bear with us.)

Electrical problems can be some of the toughest issues to diagnose. There are components, connectors, wiring, and everything in between that need to be checked before you can pinpoint the actual problem.

Having the right diagnostic tools matters, but the experience of the technician using them matters just as much.

Fortunately, Rob tracked down the damage and got to work undoing the electrical customization job nobody asked for.

Apparently, rodents are pretty good at demolition. Electrical repair? Not so much.
