Most people assume winter is what kills a car battery. AAA says it is actually the heat.

High temperatures speed up fluid loss and oxidation inside the battery, which is why AAA calls heat the number one cause of battery failure and reduced battery life. Most batteries have a three to five year service life even with good care. AAA also sees roadside calls climb when temperatures sit above 90 for a few days in a row, and dead batteries are at the top of that list.

If yours is in that three to five year range, a test takes a few minutes. Worth pairing it with a charging system check while the car is here, because a failing alternator is one of the most common reasons a battery goes down early.

We will tell you what the test says. If it has life left in it, we will tell you that too.

Cars talk to you before they break. The trick is knowing what to listen for. Three sounds you should never ignore.

1. Rhythmic knocking that speeds up with RPM. Could be rod bearings or valve train. Both serious.
2. Squealing that changes with engine speed. Usually a belt or pulley on the way out.
3. Grinding when you brake. That is metal on metal and rotors are next.

Most local shops give you 12 months or 12,000 miles on parts and labor, if that. Zabor covers you for two years or 24,000 miles on qualifying repairs at both locations. That means work we do today is still under warranty next summer. It is one of the reasons customers come back and refer friends.

July 4 weekend is a few weeks out. Three things to check before any long drive.

• Tire pressure when cold. Check the sticker inside your driver door jamb, not the number stamped on the tire. The sticker is your spec.
• Coolant level. Overflow tank should sit between MIN and MAX when the engine is cold.
• Wiper blades. Summer storms hit fast, and bad blades turn a downpour into a five mile slow lane.

If anything looks off, we are open the rest of this week and through July 3 at both shops. Bring it in before the highway gets busy.

Why your engine runs hotter in summer.

Three reasons most drivers do not think about:

1. Ambient air is already 80 to 95 degrees, so your radiator has less margin to dump heat.
2. The AC compressor is pulling extra load off the engine every minute you have cold air running.
3. Stop and go traffic gives you less airflow over the radiator, exactly when the engine is generating the most heat.

The fix is not complicated. A coolant level check, a cabin condition check, and a working thermostat. If your temp gauge has been creeping higher than usual, that is the sign to bring it in.
