University of Rochester Black Students' Union The Black Students' Union strives to promote social and cultural awareness while cultivating diversity at the University of Rochester. BSU's goals:

1.)

Our primary goal is to improve community relations within the university as well as within the city of Rochester. To provide a vehicle and forum for the articulation and expression of views and interests of the Black students at the University.

2.) To establish and maintain active relations amongst and between the University's Black Students and its faculty and staff.

3.) To operate open communi

cations between the University's Black Community and that of the city of Rochester

4.) To foster the recognition of the educational and cultural needs of Black students at the University. NOTE: These goals are achieved through dedicated students and staff that are committed to organizing educational and cultural events that provide for a more diverse campus along with monitoring issues that are pertinent to the Black Community of the University.

Happy Birthday to a legend, Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. has impacted not only the black community, but the entire nation. Many remember his impactful “I have a Dream” speech in 1963. But, Dr. King Jr. has also worked with many other civil rights leaders to organize marches like the Montgomery Bus Boycott to protest segregation of city buses or the March on Washington, in which was organized for the civil and economic rights of African Americans.
So, today we say Happy Birthday Dr.King Jr! REST IN POWER✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿

The Step Show Competition is back! 😊 This year will be BSU's 18th Annual Step Show Competition & the theme this year is Heroes and Villains🦹‍♀️🦸‍♀️ Tickets are being sold at $2 for UR students & $5 for general public, so make sure you get your tickets!! 😊😊😊 Once at occupancy doors will be closed, so get your tickets soon 🤝🏾 We will see you there.

We’ve officially just wrapped up Kwanzaa. We are very grateful that you all chose to come celebrate with us tonight. This was the last program from BSU, so until next year friends! Have a great holiday season. Good luck on finals!!🤍

UMOJA: UNITY This is the first principle of 7 that is celebrated within Kwanzaa. BSU at U of R wants to bring unity between the student body and the community of Rochester. We have decided to do this by ensuring we give back to the people by doing a toiletries drive.

We will accept deodorant, soap, lotion, chapstick, toothpaste, toothbrushes, & feminine products. All of these will be donated to the Bethany House Rochester.

Bring anything from the accepted toiletries list to the Kwanzaa Dinner, Sunday, Dec. 11th, and you will be entered into a RAFFLE for a Gift Card! The winner will be announced at the END OF THE DINNER!!

June 19 - AKA: Juneteenth, Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day - commemorates the proclamation that freed enslaved African Americans in rebellion states, here are some facts about this day:
- Juneteenth only became a recognized national holiday on June 17th, 2021
- Juneteenth originated in Galveston Texas, the enslaved people there were the last to learn of their freedom on June 19th, 1865
- There is a Juneteenth Flag of Freedom. It is half red and half blue with a star in the middle.
- Strawberry soda is one of the oldest traditional things to consume on Juneteenth

The Black Student Alliance Conference is the first of an annual effort to bring together collegiate and high school students to commemorate and celebrate the work of Black Student Unions in Monroe County. The event will serve to create unity and camaraderie amongst Black students in Rochester while simultaneously acquainting high school students with college life. Students will work together in a variety of workshops to hone their leadership skills with the intention of creating more robust programming in their respective schools. Our intention is to prepare Black students for organization and leadership responsibilities on a scale larger than individual schools.

The BSA Conference will be held at the University of Rochester in Wegmans Hall auditorium Friday, April 29th, 9am - 2pm.
