End-of-Summer Maintenance for Your VW
As late summer winds down, it's the perfect time to give your Volkswagen some attention before the cooler weather arrives. The heat and long road trips of summer can take a toll on your car, and a little proactive maintenance can help you avoid problems and prepare for the change in seasons.
Here’s a simple checklist to get your VW ready for fall:
1. Inspect Your Tires
Hot pavement and long drives can accelerate tire wear. Check your tire pressure and make sure it's at the recommended level. Look for any uneven wear or signs of damage. A proper tire rotation and alignment now can extend the life of your tires and improve your vehicle’s handling.
2. Check Your A/C
You've likely been using your A/C a lot this summer, so now is the time to check it. Make sure it's still blowing cold and that there are no strange smells or noises. A clean cabin air filter is key for both airflow and air quality.
3. Test the Battery
Heat is a major factor in battery degradation. It can cause the fluid inside to evaporate, which can leave you with a dead battery when the first cold snap hits. Have your battery tested by a professional to ensure it’s in good health and ready for the drop in temperature.
4. Examine Fluids and Filters
High temperatures can cause engine oil to break down faster. Check your oil level and clarity, and consider an oil change if you're due. Also, check your coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. Make sure your engine air filter is clean and free of debris from summer drives, as a clogged filter can impact performance and fuel efficiency.
5. Look Over Hoses and Belts
The engine bay gets hot in the summer, which can cause rubber hoses and belts to crack or become brittle. Take a look at all the hoses for any visible signs of wear. Check your serpentine belt for fraying or glazing—a failing belt can cause big problems.
Taking a little time now to perform these checks can help you ensure your VW is reliable and ready for whatever the new season brings.
