As the new school year begins this month, streets and sidewalks will be filled with excited students walking, biking, and riding to school. Itβs the perfect time to remind everyone about the importance of pedestrian safety.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one in every five children under the age of 15 who were killed in traffic crashes in 2021 was a pedestrian.
Here are a few key reminders for drivers:
- Slow down in school zones and stay alert.
- Always yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
- Put distractions away, texting can wait.
- Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians or a school bus with its stop-arm extended. ***You are required to stop on Hwy 77 if a bus has a stop sign out, no matter what side of the highway you are on.***
Parents, make sure students remember to:
- Stay alert! Phones and headphones can wait until youβre safely across the street.
- Cross at corners or marked crosswalks.
- Look left-right-left before crossing the street.
