I have a saying I adopted from a mentor years ago: "Cats don't die, they get murdered." It means your catalytic converter you just replaced didn't just go bad all on it's own. Something killed it.

If you're not finding the root cause of the failure, that nice expensive new converter you just put on your car is going to fail sooner than later. A good catalytic converter behind a properly-running engine should last several hundred thousand miles, full stop. When they scan the codes in your car and it says "P0420/P0430" it shouldn't be a green light to replace a converter. That's not diagnosing, that's a code scan.

This engine has been running rich, and while the failed converter isn't currently causing a restriction in the exhaust, it definitely needs to be replaced. The reason this engine is running rich is because the timing chain has so much slack in it that the crankshaft can rotate over 10° without moving the distributor rotor; while the ignition timing is correct, the spark plugs are brand new, the injectors have all been replaced, the fuel pressure is correct, and so on, this engine's mechanical valve timing is delayed. This causes the valves to open and close late, and sadly, the thousands of dollars that were already spent on this problem weren't needed.

While the picture doesn't look great, I'm pretty sure you can tell that this isn't what it's supposed to look like.

If it looks "slow" outside, it isn't. Scheduling by appointment allows me to not have overcrowding of vehicles, and allows ones like these to stay tucked inside and locked up at night. And when it "looks packed" it doesn't mean you can't get in fairly quickly with an appointment time!

Today brought with it two sweet rides. '66 Fairlane and a '64 C-10, both full restorations. One came in for an electrical draw, and the other came by to see about getting air conditioning installed and the condenser shorted out in the distributor, so it gets to stay the night and both will be fixed tomorrow.

Moisture intrusion is never any fun. It's the main reason we recommend avoiding flooded vehicles, especially modern cars with modules in the floorboards. This one is actually from an older Toyota, and it had been leaking water in through the windshield. That tiny leak when it rained ended up turning this little truck into a driveway decoration for this owner. New unit is ordered and it'll be back to working on the farm again soon.

Funny how things work sometimes. This Volvo had a cylinder #3 misfire, due to a failed coil. No big deal... and no complaints of timing noises or faults. When i removed the upper cover to access the coils I noticed the timing belt had a lot of slack in it...

New water pump and timing kit (and a new front timing cover which was half the price at the dealer than it was anywhere else) and she's running smoothly, like it never happened.

This thing was maybe a few miles from catastrophic engine failure from the timing belt breaking/shredding/jumping.

Because, reasons. And no good ones. Wiring "repairs" like this can cause a lot more damage than most people realize. ...

Because, reasons. And no good ones. Wiring "repairs" like this can cause a lot more damage than most people realize. Luckily (at least to this point, and as far as I can tell) there hasn't been any major damage caused by this rats nest of wiring repairs. They have the 5V reference tied back into another circuit, from a green wire to a green/white wire. After this is fixed, I'll verify it's working properly before proceeding with the timing belt and spark plugs on this 3.0L Toyota. They had it taped up really well, it actually didn't look like it had been repaired or messed with until I pulled everything back. Wiggle testing and manipulating the harness while watching my voltages on the oscilloscope helped to pinpoint this mess.

Complaint was a check engine light, which was due to a fault in the Transmission Fluid Temp Sensor circuit.
