Happy Friday Everyone! In 1989, River Falls Fire changed its on-boarding process to groups (class) instead of individuals. Today we highlight another individual from this first class in our Firefighter Friday segment, Mark Hilden. After showing interest in serving the community and completing an application for the department, Mark was invited down to the station starting June 5th, 1989 by former member Don Foley. At the time, members had to live or work within the city limits. Probationary members were not issued pagers and given hand me down gear. Whenever a call came in, the siren on top of the station would sound. Probationary members were expected to come to the station to observe and help with tasks around the station. Over time Mark completed his state certifications and became a full-fledged member. Since then, he has served in many roles including Captain and Chief Engineer. Currently he is the Engineer on Engine 20 and is essential in keeping our equipment running smoothly. Although partial to Engine 20, he says his all-time favorite truck was Engine 9 from when he first joined. This was a 1955 International R170 owned by the rural fire association and had a 500 gallon per minute pump with 750 gallons of water on board. Far ahead of other trucks at the time. Mark still has the spec sheet from this truck as a memento! Mark encourages all firefighters to continue their training to be best prepared for the ever-changing calls we respond to, yet always put family and work first.
In addition to firefighting, Mark runs a repair shop out of his house. Between the two, he is a very busy guy, but tries to make time for fun. He likes being outdoors hunting, fishing, car shows and going to tractor pulls.
We thank Mark for his time and dedication to serving those in the River Falls area!
