A lot of shops have scanners.
Not all scanners are the same. Not even close.
You can buy a handheld on Amazon for $100. It will pull codes. That is about all it will do.
A Mercedes DAS tool costs $10,000 to $15,000. Then you pay annual licensing on top of that. Then you keep it updated constantly. That is what it actually costs to speak a Mercedes the way Mercedes speaks it.
We run five diagnostic tools here. Two of them replicate the factory tools for the brands we work on. Audi. Land Rover. Mercedes. BMW. Each one has the right software on it for that model line.
And they come with something a cheap scanner will never give you. Tech support from a master technician. If I run into a coding issue on a Rover, I can submit the case and get a master Rover tech on the line who tells me exactly where to go with it.
That is not something you get with the $100 tool from Amazon.
When you bring your European vehicle somewhere, ask what diagnostic tools they use. If they can't name them or they show you a generic handheld, that is your answer.
