FYI: driving through high water can destroy an engine !
The biggest danger is hydrolock. If water gets sucked through the air intake into the cylinders, water cannot be compressed like air/fuel can. The engine can suddenly stop, and connecting rods, pistons, or other internal components can bend or break. That can mean a completely ruined engine.
๐ How deep is dangerous?
* A few inches: Usually okay for most vehicles if driven slowly, though brakes and electrical components can still be affected.
* Around the bottom of the doors: Getting risky. Water can reach electrical components and other systems.
* Up to the air intake: Extremely dangerous. Water can be sucked into the engine.
* Above the hood: Very high risk of engine damage and potentially losing control of the vehicle.
Also, donโt restart a vehicle that has stalled in deep water. If water got into the cylinders, restarting it is what can cause severe mechanical damage....
