This cracked intake hose was causing a lean condition on the engine, leading to performance issues and a check engine light.

When unmetered air sneaks into the engine through a crack like this, the air/fuel mixture gets thrown off, making the engine work harder than it should.

The tricky part? A problem like this can easily be mistaken for something much bigger (and more expensive).
