Adding a lift kit, aftermarket wheels, or other non-OEM accessories to a new vehicle doesn’t necessarily mean the vehicle’s entire warranty is void.

But there are other questions dealers need to consider.

Does the dealer agreement allow the modification? Does the customer know which parts are covered? Could the modification affect safety, emissions, or the vehicle’s operation?

And don’t forget the pricing piece: aftermarket products added before a customer shops for the vehicle need to be reflected in the advertised price.

Could aftermarket parts affect more than the vehicle warranty?

Adding non-OEM or aftermarket parts to a new vehicle may not automatically void the manufacturer’s warranty, but it can create other concerns for dealers.

Depending on the modification, there could be questions about warranty coverage, insurance, customer disclosures, or even the dealership’s obligations under its dealer agreement.

Before modifying a new vehicle, know what your agreement and insurance policy allow and make sure the customer understands what is and isn’t covered.

The buyers' guide requirement applies to any vehicle driven for purposes other than moving or test driving, which includes demonstrators and vehicles with significant miles put on before delivery.

If your demonstrators are leaving without buyers guides, that's an exposure you need to fix today.
