I was called out to diagnose a loud rattle on 2010 Acura RL on 5-24-25. My prognosis was a failed timing belt tensioner. I instructed the owner they shouldn't drive the car, and told them I was free that evening to do a timing belt/water pump job. They insisted doing it the next day, to which I said it's not a good idea to drive the car until this is fixed. My warning fell on deaf ears... 8:51am on 5-25-25 I get a call the car shut off on the interstate. They insisted it was the serpentine belt I had removed the day before to prove it wasn't the serpentine belt tensioner and in fact the timing belt tensioner. I show up, serpentine belt is still on. They now want to tow it to my shop and do the timing belt kit. I forewarned them that these are interference motors and that just replacing the belt may not get it back running as it has previously. They wanted to move forward. In hindsight I probably should've scoped the cylinders for damage but I wasn't trying to argue about an hour of diagnostic time with them, they were adamant replacing the belt would fix it. Belt kit installed, car runs... But only on 3 cylinders. I tried to save this one but the rattle won this time. I love doing timing jobs, they're probably my favorite thing to do but my famous last words will always be: do not ignore the rattle. Trying to delay the inevitable will only cost you in the long run. And with that, c'est la vie. Onto the next one. I wish them better luck in the future and this was an expensive lesson to learn.
