Proper Noise

Proper Noise Vintage Automobiles | Reading, PA What is Proper Noise? The positive click of a correctly aligned door latch. The reassuring tick from a healthy fuel pump.

A whirring starter motor awakening a well-tuned engine with a bark. A rhythmic idle originating from balanced carburetors and ignition, that transforms into a combined wail of gears, induction, and combustion.

This is Proper Noise.

We focus on delivering the visceral motoring experience that only a vintage car can evoke.

After 12 years developing his skills at some of the best shops in the region, Ed Sweeney returned to Reading to continue that tradition of craftsmanship.

The 1937 Mercedes sedan in our shop right now arrived without any oil filter assembly installed. If you look at some of the photos at the end, you'll see the original "spaltfilter" design that would be agitated every time you hit the clutch pedal, dropping sludge into a trap in the crankcase that would get cleaned out periodically. Besides the fact that the original was missing from this car, we also felt that a modern filter element would make sense with modern oil so we engineered and machined the housing to run a 40 micron stainless steel filter that can be changed in regular intervals.

Replacing the damaged cables inside 60's Ferrari door window motors. The real trick is getting the cable length correct, because each adjustment means disassembling the motor to remove the spool and recrimping the wire shorter. The right door was exactly 9 ft. The left door was 8 ft 11 in!
