Choosing the Right Undercoating
At Drew’s Rust Proofing, we don’t believe one undercoating is right for every vehicle. The best product depends heavily on the age of the vehicle, the amount of existing rust, and the condition of the frame and underbody.
Here’s how we determine which option is best:
ASPHALT-BASED UNDERCOATING
Best for: Newer vehicles / little to no existing rust
Asphalt-based undercoating creates a thick, durable barrier that protects clean metal from water, road salt, moisture, and road debris.
Because this type of coating dries and cures into a firm protective layer, we prefer using it on vehicles that are new, clean, or have very minimal corrosion. Proper preparation is especially important because we don’t want to simply cover significant active rust with a hardened coating.
How it cures:
✓ Dries and firms up
✓ Creates a solid protective barrier
✓ Should not remain wet after properly curing
✓ Heavier areas can take longer to fully cure
Ideal for: New vehicles, clean frames, restored vehicles, and vehicles with very minimal surface rust.

NHOU V3 HYBRID
Best for: Light to moderate existing rust
NHOU V3 gives us a middle-ground option between a hard asphalt coating and a traditional soft rustproofing treatment.
It is designed to provide corrosion protection while creating a more durable but still flexible coating.
V3 does not necessarily cure like paint or asphalt. After application, it begins to set up, but it can remain somewhat soft or tacky—especially when applied heavily, in seams, or in areas with limited airflow.
That does not automatically mean the product hasn’t cured correctly. Its flexibility is part of how the coating is designed to protect the vehicle.
How it cures:
✓ Sets up and becomes more stable
✓ Remains flexible
✓ May stay soft/tacky longer in heavier areas
✓ Does not become rock-hard like asphalt
Ideal for: Daily drivers and vehicles with light-to-moderate existing corrosion where we want both rust protection and increased durability.
⸻
WOOLWAX
Best for: Moderate to heavy existing rust
Woolwax is a lanolin-based rust preventative that works very differently from a traditional hard undercoating.
Instead of drying over existing corrosion, Woolwax remains soft and active. This allows it to pe*****te rust, seams, cracks, and difficult-to-reach areas while helping protect the remaining metal from moisture and road salt.
This is why we often recommend Woolwax for older or rustier vehicles rather than covering significant existing corrosion with a hard coating.
Woolwax is supposed to remain soft and greasy/waxy. It does not fully dry.
How it cures:
✓ Does NOT harden
✓ Remains soft and flexible
✓ Maintains a greasy/waxy feel
✓ Continues creeping into seams and hard-to-reach areas
Ideal for: Older vehicles, rusty frames, moderate-to-heavy existing corrosion, and vehicles where a hard coating isn’t the best choice.

THE EASY WAY TO REMEMBER IT
LITTLE TO NO RUST → ASPHALT
A tough, hard-curing barrier over a clean foundation.
LIGHT TO MODERATE RUST → NHOU V3
A hybrid option that sets up but maintains flexibility.
MODERATE TO HEAVY RUST → WOOLWAX
A soft, non-hardening treatment that works well on vehicles that already have significant corrosion.
Why We Offer Multiple Products
The goal isn’t to simply spray the thickest or hardest coating possible.
The condition underneath the coating matters.
A product that’s excellent for a brand-new truck may not be the best choice for a 15-year-old rusty frame. That’s why we inspect the vehicle first and recommend the system that makes the most sense for its current condition.
