Oct 10, 2022 - Four years ago today was this last flight of our original Murphy Moose with its M14 radial engine to drop it off and begin our first TURBINE ENGINE conversion! Four years later and we’re working on our 11th turbine conversion!

The takeoff where you do nothing ✈️

That’s the biggest shock on a first flight in the TMCX Helio Turbine. Push the throttle forward, the prop hits 2200 RPM, and you’re flying before you can comprehend what’s going on.

Most airplanes are a juggling act on takeoff, and there’s that spot on the ground where pilots get in trouble. The Helio skips it. The less you do, the better it works. Help the tail up and you delay the takeoff roll. Pull it off the ground early and you’re just fighting the airplane.

Leave the controls neutral, the tail comes up a little, and it flies itself off.

We’re back in NY this week for the DAR inspection and test flights of this gorgeous amphibious Helio Courier that we upgraded for our customer with our PT6 turbine conversion.

Huge flaps but also slats … The automatic leading-edge slats on the Helio Courier are the defining engineering feat behind its legendary STOL performance, providing a 65% increase in lift at low airspeeds. When combined with the aircraft's oversized Fowler flaps, they effectively increase the overall wing surface area by roughly 33% when fully extended. The four aerodynamic slats deploy automatically via air pressure alone whenever airspeed drops below 55 to 60 mph. Because they force high-velocity airflow over the top of the wing, they completely eliminate a conventional aerodynamic stall. This continuous lift allows the aircraft to maintain fully controllable, stable flight at speeds as low as 30 mph. For comparison, most light aircraft of similar weight would stall and spin out of the sky at these speeds. The slats enable the Helio Courier to take off or land in as little as 150 feet or less, comfortably allowing it to operate out of tight spaces. The immense aerodynamic drag generated when the slats and flaps are deployed acts like a parachute, letting the pilot "mush" down at high sink rates without gaining dangerous forward airspeed.
