Below 45 mph, windows down wins. Most people assume AC always costs more fuel, it depends entirely on speed.
Running AC for just 10 minutes weekly prevents expensive compressor failure. A dormant compressor loses lubrication and seals dry out. The refrigerant itself carries the lubricating oil. If you go months without running it (like winter), you risk a $500–$1,500 compressor replacement. Running it briefly year-round costs almost nothing and can save you a major repair.
