Another great stop on my adventure found me in Henderson, Kentucky. I drove here to meet up with Glenn Lancaster who for history sake was involved in producing 200 plus modified Olt L-22's and turning them into the one and only "Band Aid" calls. These were the first calls to have the distinct cliucking sound. First of it's kind. Glenn and his brother LD Lancaster used these calls for years in the fields and marshes of Kentucky, Illinois and Canada. To say I was awestruck when I met Glenn was an understatement. He was to say the least, a true gentleman and went out his way to share alot of pictures and stories and even field trips to see the things we had talked about previously.
First day we went and seen areas close to Henderson. I wanted to see the infamous KMart blind and Glenn drove there to show me. He also pointed out where Charlie Hess would stand in front of the Kmart blind and grill stuff while the boys were out dove hunting. Its the picture with the pallet and propane tank. He then took me around to show me other properties where they all hunted together down along the river bottoms. You could almost hear the history speaking to you!! So cool to be in the presence of such an important person in Goose Call History and willing to share it with me. First evening we spent looking at photos and Glenn sharing stories of his brother LD who he cared for deeply and they hunted together everywhere. It was great to see such great brotherly love and to have spent so many hunts and hours together. Truly special!!
Day two we were up with the chickens and after stopping for breakfast we were on our way to Marion, Illinois to go by Glenns Hunt Club and to see more sights. Stopped at Glenns Hunt Club and it was picture perfect. Beautiful location and very well kept and that's thanks to Zack Hawk who maintains the property for Glenn. Tha layout of the club and the large pond and the pit I had to check out by the pond. My mind was racing with all the history of this place. I just wish the geese were around the area like they used to be. Just sad!!
We left the club and Glenn took me around the area by Marion and Crab Orcherd Lake. It was so sad to hear Glenn speak of this spot where this club once was and this spot where this club was. All gone!! It's sad to see an era that came to an end and is now geared more towards ducks and very few geese.
It was great to see the whole area and from what Glenn told me was how much the City of Marion has grown over the years. After getting back and grabbing a little dinner we talked alot about the past, the hunting and good friends no longer with us. Please help keep the memories and history alive!! Glenn a I spent some time in his shop as well where we looked at old calls. While searching I spotted an L-22 and an A-50 laying loosely in the box. I always message Glenn when I find another Band Aid call and this time It was in person. In the box was an unmarked Band Aid call. I said to Glenn "I found another Band Aid call" and an unmarked A-50 flute. So it seems the Band Aid call was Glenns actual call he used in the field a the A-50 which was modified was given to him by Tim Grounds. Glenn then says that I should take those with me. I about hit the floor!! What a great pair to be given by Glenn Lancaster. I will cherish them always and Glenns actual hunting Band Aid call will take it's place next too the number two call which was Glenn's brothers call. LD Lancaster that Glenn gifted me a short time ago. What a historical moment in time!!
