To the End of the Earth in a BMW M Coupe 🗺️

When driving a road like this, a 1,500-kilometer round trip of rock/shale/gravel in mediocre conditions at the best of times, in addition to 5000+ kilometers of highway to get us there and back, you’d elect to travel in a more roomy, comfortable vehicle with creature comforts and a sense of reliability such as my new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. However, being the gearheads we are (read idiots), we chose to tackle this trip in Ryan’s 2001 BMW M-Coupe. That’s right, a two-door, two-seater, hatchback, with MMMMMuch more power than the Jeep! Then and there, “Inuvik or Bust” was born.

Overlanding Inspiration :: a i d a n 🗺️

There’s no shortage of travel photography and overland content online, which means it takes someone decidedly unique to stand out. The success of an adventure photographer is not guaranteed through beautiful imagery alone but rather its ability to tell a story. The more compelling the narrative and imagery the more it captures the hearts and minds of the audience. Aidan Klimenko is one such photographer that has that special something: an eye for a story that needs to be told and a command over photography (with a focus on film) that reflects years of painstaking hard work. Every time he posts a photo it ignites a sense of wanderlust and intrigue that leaves you wanting to know more. However, in order to access the hard-to-reach places that oftentimes characterize his work, Aidan requires a vehicle that he can absolutely depend on. Cue his expedition-equipped Toyota Troopy, which is not just a capable four-season rolling home but also a mobile film-developing lab.

Porsche 944 across Africa ( Pub2Pub ) 🗺️

In an effort to better absorb the rough roads that lie ahead, and to provide a spot more ground clearance, the suspension was swapped in favor of one with increased ride height -to this former Porsche mechanic, it appears to be the factory suspension that came on the U.S. spec model 944’s. Whether it was to pacify the USDOT’s bumper and headlight height restrictions at that time, or Porsche’s answer to our less than stellar road conditions, the exact reason Porsche produced a taller suspension for the U.S. escapes me at the moment. To avoid sleeping on the ground in unfamiliar areas, Ben also constructed a roof rack and sleeping platform to accept a ground tent that could be quickly deployed -an important feature since camping was planned for nearly every night of the trip. He and Laura would have to ease their way into the tent via the hood careful not to damage the windshield on the ascent. With vehicle prep complete, and Ben quietly stressing over the low probability of the Porsche completing the journey, the group set out for Cape Town.

South Africa Overland :: Luisa Bell 🗺️

There are countries within continents which are quite unlike those surrounding them: Uruguay and Turkey are good examples. And South Africa is unique on the African continent. It is a land of extremes: wealth and poverty, desert and tropical coast, cities and wide-open spaces. Yes, it has its challenges, but the crime and political instability should not dissuade you from exploring a country so beautiful and diverse that it is affectionately known as the Rainbow Nation. We found ourselves in lockdown in South Africa and fell in love (again) with a country that has so much to offer. Long Range Desert Group Expeditions - by Scott Brady

Based in Cairo, Egypt, this disparate band of highly trained forces wreaked havoc amongst enemy troops in the Sahara by attacking from the direction they least expected – across hundreds of miles of desolate and barren desert. One of their most daring and successful raids was on the Italian Fort and Airfield at Murzuq on 11th January 1941. A force of 76 men in 23 trucks drove a staggering 1200 miles from Cairo to blow up the Airfield and shell the Fort. They used 2 WD Chevy and Ford 30 cwt trucks. These were later supplemented with the Jeep, which proved faster for specialised missions. Such missions often involved the newly formed Special Air Services (SAS) under the orders of David Stirling, founder of the SAS.

Traveling Across the Silk Road and Pamir Highway ( Björn Eldracher ) 🗺️

Through the desert-like plateau, we continued to climb until reaching Murghab. The village only has a few thousand inhabitants and offers good supply options in the local bazaar. It sits a little lower at about a 3,600-meter elevation within the high mountain landscape. Fortunately, we were completely untouched by symptoms of elevation sickness, and the Landy was still going strong at the high elevation.
