2000 Ford F-250 :: Feature Vehicle

Many of you may recognize Jon Burtt’s name from Instagram or the story we ran on his Tacoma a few years back. By the time he sold that rig, it was one of the most heavily modified and well-known Toyotas in the community, but Jon wanted something better. He wanted more payload, better fuel economy, a larger bed, and in general, a platform better suited to his needs, and the Ford Super-Duty was a perfect choice. Specifically, Jon chose a 2000 F-250 Super Cab Short Bed with the legendary 7.3L Power Stroke turbo-diesel. Besides being widely regarded as the most reliable diesel ever sold in a Ford, the 7.3L was produced before emissions and DEF requirements which allow it to run easily on low-quality diesel as well as the high-sulfur diesel found in foreign countries.

Each year, the Overland Expo Foundation partners with a manufacturer to build one of their Ultimate Overland projects, and this year they focused on a midsize build with Nissan and Tune Outdoor campers.

Nissan has been doing big things in the space, including launching their Armada PRO-4X with a rear locker and announcing the return of the XTerra (which will have available 35″ tires). This continues to expand their offerings for overlanders, built on decades of Nissan Patrol, Hardbody, and Frontier heritage.

Anthony Sicola was the champion of this year’s build, working with Nissan and Tune Campers to assemble an accessible and capable project.

The Frontier is capable out of the box, but Alldogs Offroad has an impressive suspension offering, combining Titan components and FOX shocks to add several inches of track width along with increased load capacity and articulation.

The factory mono-leaf suspension has limitations (particularly on step-out in corrugation and under load variability), so the rear springs were swapped for custom units to handle the weight of the camper.
