🏁 Lotus Elise or Alfa Romeo 4C Spider?

Keith Martin’s 2006 Lotus Elise is his all-time favorite sports car — light, raw, mid-engine and about as connected to the road as it gets.

There’s just one problem: Keith can no longer operate its 6-speed manual.

Enter the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider. Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, lightweight and equipped with a dual-clutch transmission he can drive. Better yet, good examples of both cars currently live in roughly the same $40k–$50k neighborhood.

So the question is: Do you keep a favorite sports car you can no longer drive, or trade it for an Alfa that promises much of the same experience?

$42.9 million. Six built. And one very important mission: beat Ferrari. 🇺🇸🏁

The 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe CSX2300 helped Carroll Shelby do exactly that, playing a role in Shelby American’s historic 1965 FIA World Manufacturers’ Championship.

More than 60 years later, CSX2300 was victorious again — selling for $42,905,000 at this year's Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach auction and becoming the most valuable American car ever sold at public auction.

Not bad for a race car that, at one point, was nearly pushed overboard into the North Sea. 😳

Imagine driving your 1963 Porsche 356B to the DMV… only to be told the car has been crushed.😳

That’s exactly what happened to Dolly and her beloved 356B, “Louise.”

A trailer with the same six-digit chassis number had been junked, somehow triggering a chain of records that officially declared the Porsche nonexistent. What followed was five months of DMV calls, inspections, affidavits and bureaucratic hoops just to prove one very obvious fact:

The Porsche was still very much alive.😂

In the latest Legal Files, SCM contributor John Draneas looks at how modern vehicle databases can collide with the short chassis numbers found on vintage cars — and what collectors should know when the computer record says something very different from reality.

That’ll be $582,500, please. 😂💸

Okay, so it’s not exactly just a Supra.

Only 35 genuine TRD 3000GTs were created, and this is the only known example built from a U.S.-spec, left-hand-drive Supra. With its TRD widebody, nearly 500 horsepower and serious rarity, this is a Japanese performance unicorn.

It sold for $582,500 at Broad Arrow Auctions’ Carmel sale — and SCM’s Mark R. Brinker explains why that price might not be as crazy as it sounds.

Keith Martin is on the home stretch of an epic road trip in his Alfa Romeo S4 Spider after joining fellow Alfisti at the Alfa Romeo Owners Club National Convention in Ogden, Utah.

Along the way, Keith shared the story of Sports Car Market — and how dramatically the collector-car world has changed over SCM’s 38 years — then made a worthwhile detour to Golden Spike National Historical Park to see a pair of working steam locomotives.

Now it’s time to point the Alfa toward Portland and finish the journey home.

💛 $351,500 for a 996 GT3. Yes, you read that correctly.

Remember when the 996 was the 911 everyone loved to complain about? Fried-egg headlights. Plastic interior. Water cooling. The horror. 😱

Well… some 996s have officially entered the collectible-car chat.

This 2004 Porsche 911 GT3, finished in Speed Yellow and showing just 9,700 miles, sold for an eye-opening $351,500 at Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach auction.

And this wasn’t your average 996. It was a one-owner car equipped with PCCB brakes, powered by the legendary Mezger flat-6, and fresh from a $64,000 Porsche Classic preservation program that earned it top national honors in the 2025 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge.

🏁 BUY: 1986–91 BMW M3 (E30) — While values for original M3s have been heading north for a while, they still have room to run. Are these homologation heroes poised to be the next Carrera RS 2.7?

🏎️ SELL: 1986–89 Ferrari 328 — Timeless Pininfarina looks, gated 5-speed manual and old-school V8 charm. If you’ve got a pristine, low-mileage example, it might be time to let someone else enjoy the drive.
