⚠️ The Invisible Fire Hazard: What Happens When Your House "Loses a Leg"
Have you ever had half the power in your house suddenly go out?

Many homeowners assume this is just a minor glitch. In reality, it is a serious electrical emergency known as a "lost leg"—and operating your home in this state is a major fire hazard.

The Basics: How Your Home Gets PowerMost modern homes use a 240-volt split-phase system.
Power travels from the utility pole to your breaker panel through three main wires:Leg A (120 Volts)Leg B (120 Volts)Neutral Wire (The return path)Your standard 120V wall outlets connect to just one of these legs. Your heavy-duty appliances (like your AC, stove, or dryer) connect to both legs simultaneously to pull the full 240 volts they need to run.
🔥 How a "Lost Leg" Can Start a FireA "lost leg" happens when one of those two hot wires gets damaged—usually by a fallen tree branch, a blown utility fuse, or a corroded connection.
If you try to keep running your house normally when this happens, two dangerous things can occur:
1. The 240V "Bridge" (Backfeeding)When Leg B goes dead, it shouldn't have any electricity. However, if your electric water heater or stove is left turned on, it creates a physical bridge between the two sides. Electricity will travel down the live Leg A, cross through the appliance, and flow backward into the dead Leg B.
2. Overloading the Neutral WireIn a healthy home, the electrical currents from Leg A and Leg B naturally cancel each other out on the shared neutral wire.But when you are backfeeding through a large appliance, the currents no longer cancel out. Instead, they combine. This can quickly overload the neutral wire. Because standard neutral wires do not have circuit breakers to trip them, the wire can quietly bake inside your walls, melt its insulation, and ignite a fire.
3. Wild Voltage SpikesIf the leg isn't completely cut but is loose or failing, it causes a "floating neutral" or massive voltage imbalances. Outlets on one side of your house might drop to 60 volts, while the other side spikes up to 180 volts. This extreme over-voltage will cause electronics, refrigerator compressors, and charging blocks to instantly overheat, smoke, and catch fire.
🚨 What To Do If You Experience a Partial OutageIf half of your house loses power, or if your lights are severely dimming and brightening like a strobe light:
Flip the Big Breakers: Immediately turn off your large 240V breakers (AC, Dryer, Electric Range, Water Heater) to break the "bridge."
Unplug Electronics: Protect your computers, TVs, and appliances from destructive voltage spikes.
Call Your Utility Company First: Call your power provider immediately to report a "partial power outage."
They will check the lines outside and your electric meter for free. If the issue is on their side, they will fix it.
If they clear it, call an electrician right away.
