⚠️ The Invisible Fire Hazard: What Happens When Your House "Loses a Leg"

Have you ever had half the power in your house suddenly go out?

Maybe the kitchen lights work, but the living room is completely dark. Or perhaps your clothes dryer spins, but it won’t get hot.

Many homeowners assume this is just a minor glitch. In reality, it is a serious electrical emergency known as a "lost leg"—and operating your home in this state is a major fire hazard.

Here is a simple breakdown of how losing half your power can put your home at risk.🔌

The Basics: How Your Home Gets PowerMost modern homes use a 240-volt split-phase system.

Power travels from the utility pole to your breaker panel through three main wires:Leg A (120 Volts)Leg B (120 Volts)Neutral Wire (The return path)Your standard 120V wall outlets connect to just one of these legs. Your heavy-duty appliances (like your AC, stove, or dryer) connect to both legs simultaneously to pull the full 240 volts they need to run.

🔥 How a "Lost Leg" Can Start a FireA "lost leg" happens when one of those two hot wires gets damaged—usually by a fallen tree branch, a blown utility fuse, or a corroded connection.

If you try to keep running your house normally when this happens, two dangerous things can occur:

1. The 240V "Bridge" (Backfeeding)When Leg B goes dead, it shouldn't have any electricity. However, if your electric water heater or stove is left turned on, it creates a physical bridge between the two sides. Electricity will travel down the live Leg A, cross through the appliance, and flow backward into the dead Leg B.

2. Overloading the Neutral WireIn a healthy home, the electrical currents from Leg A and Leg B naturally cancel each other out on the shared neutral wire.But when you are backfeeding through a large appliance, the currents no longer cancel out. Instead, they combine. This can quickly overload the neutral wire. Because standard neutral wires do not have circuit breakers to trip them, the wire can quietly bake inside your walls, melt its insulation, and ignite a fire.

3. Wild Voltage SpikesIf the leg isn't completely cut but is loose or failing, it causes a "floating neutral" or massive voltage imbalances. Outlets on one side of your house might drop to 60 volts, while the other side spikes up to 180 volts. This extreme over-voltage will cause electronics, refrigerator compressors, and charging blocks to instantly overheat, smoke, and catch fire.

🚨 What To Do If You Experience a Partial OutageIf half of your house loses power, or if your lights are severely dimming and brightening like a strobe light:

Flip the Big Breakers: Immediately turn off your large 240V breakers (AC, Dryer, Electric Range, Water Heater) to break the "bridge."

Unplug Electronics: Protect your computers, TVs, and appliances from destructive voltage spikes.

Call Your Utility Company First: Call your power provider immediately to report a "partial power outage."

They will check the lines outside and your electric meter for free. If the issue is on their side, they will fix it.

If they clear it, call an electrician right away.

🚨IMPORTANT ELECTRICAL SAFETY WARNING

1. If only parts of your home have power, treat the situation as an electrical emergency. You may have lost one “leg” of your electrical service, which can create unsafe voltage, damage appliances, overheat wiring, and cause a fire.

2. If you smell burning, see smoke, hear buzzing or crackling, notice sparks, or see signs of overheating, evacuate immediately. From a safe location, call emergency services and your electric company. Do not reenter until authorities say it is safe.

3. If there are no immediate signs of fire or smoke, avoid touching electrical equipment and do not use major appliances, outlets, or switches unnecessarily.

4. If you can do so safely, turn off the main breaker immediately. Do not approach the panel if it is wet, hot, damaged, sparking, or surrounded by smoke.

5. Contact your electric company and a licensed electrician. Report the partial power loss and follow their instructions.

6. Keep the main breaker off until the utility confirms that power is fully restored and the issue is resolved. Do not turn it back on based only on partial or intermittent power.

7. If only partial power returns, anything seems unusual, or the breaker trips again, leave it off and contact the electric company and a licensed electrician.

8. Restore power only after the utility and a qualified electrician confirm that it is safe.

🔌 GENERATOR SAFETY TIP: SWITCH KIT vs. EXTENSION CORDS

So you got yourself a generator that could power the whole house, you’re definitely not digging the trailing power cords each black out.

So let’s get in to it. I want to make sure the info is freely out there…

If you’re using a portable generator during a power outage, how you connect it to your home matters just as much as the generator itself.

⚡ TRANSFER SWITCH: A properly installed transfer switch lets you safely power selected household circuits from your generator while keeping generator power separated from utility power.

🔒 INTERLOCK KIT: On compatible electrical panels, an interlock mechanically prevents the main utility breaker and generator breaker from being ON at the same time. It can be a practical option for powering selected circuits, but it must be compatible with the panel and installed correctly.

🔌 EXTENSION CORDS: These can be appropriate for directly powering individual appliances, provided the generator and cords are properly rated. Do NOT use an extension cord to backfeed your home’s electrical panel.

🚨 WHY THIS MATTERS: Improper connections can cause dangerous backfeeding, potentially energizing utility lines and putting utility workers and others at risk.

🏠 IMPORTANT: A transfer switch or interlock kit does NOT make it safe to run a generator indoors. Generators must be operated outside and away from doors, windows, and vents because they produce deadly carbon monoxide.

💡 Before the next outage: Ask a qualified electrician whether your electrical panel is compatible with a transfer switch or interlock kit and what circuits you should have connected.

🛠️Generator Maintenance: Don’t Just Store It

If you bought a generator during this outage and now have your power back, don’t just store you generator in the back yard or shed!

You’ll 100% need it again soon — and the worst time to discover a maintenance problem is during the next power outage.

Before you store it away, take a few minutes to get it ready for storage :

🔧 Take care of the fuel. If you’re leaving fuel in the tank, use the appropriate fuel stabilizer. They also sell siphon tools at Ace for $8. Read your generator manufacturer’s instructions for draining the tank and/or running the generator until the fuel system is empty.

Old gasoline can deteriorate and cause problems with the carburetor and fuel system!

⛽ Store emergency fuel properly. If you keep gasoline for emergencies, use an approved fuel container and rotate your supply. Don’t let fuel sit indefinitely. Use older fuel when appropriate and replace it with fresh fuel as needed.

🛢️ Check the oil. Make sure the oil level is correct and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for oil changes and storage.

⚡ Start it periodically. Don’t wait until the next outage to find out it won’t start. Run your generator periodically according to the manufacturer’s guidelines and make sure it’s operating properly.

📖 Follow the manufacturer’s manual. Storage and maintenance requirements can vary by generator, so always follow the recommendations for your specific model.

You spent good money on that generator. A little maintenance now can save you a major headache when you need backup power again.

Don’t wait for the next outage to find out your generator needs attention.
