All shops these days advertise “COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS” The parts stores and even some of these shops do this service for FREE. A wise man once told me that FREE is a four-letter word that begins with “F”.
Don’t get it twisted. This is absolutely NOT “diagnostics”. They use a tool that plugs into the car and simply read the trouble codes stored in the various computers and then make a guess on what parts to sell to you. If there are no trouble codes, they make a guess based on the symptoms. They continue to sell parts until the problem goes away. I have even heard a shop owner tell his technician to “Stop all that testing and put some parts on that thing so we can make a paycheck.”
Here at Pasco Auto Diesel, the reading of codes is only one step in the process. Many times, there aren’t any codes, or the codes stored are completely unrelated to the actual problem. More times than not, there is no actual parts failure at all. We find a broken wire, a bad connection or something of that nature.
That being said, there are instances such as intermittent problems that are almost impossible to properly test. Everyone has trouble with those. Even us at Pasco Auto Diesel.
