Have you ever wondered why it will cost you anywhere from $200.00 to $308.00 for a dealer or a reputable shop to run a diagnostic on your Audi, BMW, Mercedes or other fine car? And the local auto parts stores do it for nothing? Contrary to belief it is not the emblem on the hood of your car but the type of equipment and skill of the technician and the amount of time it takes to run a full diagnostic.

In an auto parts store they have a bare bones scanner that can barely retrieve basic P- codes (ECM) Engine Control Module and it only take minutes to do but a well equipped shop has a hand held dedicated tablet that can do things such as check and reset steering angle system (SAS), Reset seat Heaters, Radio System codes ,check all functions such as lights, gauge accuracy, HVAC systems, Automotive immobilizers, Battery Management systems (BMS), Engine Control Module (ECM) Transmission Control Module (TCM) Body Control Module (BCM) and so on. Along with every other feature the Auto Parts Places can do, the main reason they even have the limited technology is Simply they want to sell you the parts. Such as a P-305 Code which simply stated Bad Coil on Plug (COP) that probably is the problem but it could a bad Connector, or corrosion on the connector and just needs cleaning or even a frayed wire leading to the connection. Possibly saving you the cost of the part. Here at Grumpy's Auto Works we have the same equipment as the dealers and large shops that charge that large amount but we have a lower overhead than they do.
