Name that fish......,

So........., I forgot to mention when Ric and I fished on Monday, I got completely spooled twice. The very first cast of the wade, had a hard thump, set the hook, and barely ever slowed it down. All the way to my backing, and then "pop"! Back to the boat to spool up. Never saw the fish, but my guess is a small shark. Last wade, last cast, and a hard thump. Set the hook, and line starts peeling off. This one we saw, and I'm pretty sure it was a big jack. Tried to get to the boat to chase him down, but failed. Second spool of line gone for the day. Fast forward to this morning. Never spooled back up from Monday, so I grabbed another rig, with the Waterloo UltraMag. Probably a lucky thing! Second thump this morning, set the hook, and my line starts burning off again. Is it a big jack, is it a small shark?? Determined not to lose $60 of line in two trips, I crank down on the drag and try horsing him in. Several big splashes, and lots of line peeling, and I'm pretty sure I have a shark. As it finally gets close enough, I see that big burnt orange back. A huge redfish. A few more short runs and she comes to hand. By far the biggest redfish I've caught wading, and on light tackle. She stretched the tape at just over 45"!! I love my Slam Mag 2, but I don't think I could've stopped this fish with it. The Ultra Mag is a beast, but still great for light tackle. Beautiful morning on the water. Nice to be back in before 9!

Never gets old......

Had the increasingly rare opportunity to make a quick morning wade with my good buddy Ric McCauley. No matter how much I get to fish, it never gets old seeing my family, friends, and customers catch fish, especially solid fish like this morning. We caught good fish at the first stop, with Ric bringing one back at a little over 22". We had a two man limit plus a few, but wanted to upgrade since it was still early. Made a short move, but the fish weren't there. I'll give credit where credit is due, and Ric suggested a quick stop at another spot before heading in. Five minutes out of the boat, and Ric is hooked up on a solid 20"er. He duplicated this on the next four casts, so I had to walk over just for a quick picture of the action, with the trusty Waterloo bowed up! We headed in with a solid box of trout, with all of Ric's between 20"-22". Great morning on the water watching a good friend hammer on the trout for a while!

Versatility.......

Fished with returning customer David, who brought along his 11 year old son, Parker, for a half day of fishing. "Plan A" from the boat, throwing live shrimp under a popping cork worked to perfection, with the exception that the redfish shrank a little overnight. They caught probably a dozen, maybe a few more, but all between 16"-18". Made a run back to the bait stand, picked up some croaker, and headed out to the "Plan B" spot for some wade fishing. Started catching trout almost right out of the boat. They boxed their limit up to 20", and probably released another two limits in the 16"-18" range. Quick photo, and back to the dock shortly after noon. Thanks David and Parker for an enjoyable morning on the water!

Beat the Heat.......

The "Dog Days" of summer are definitely here. The water temps are in the upper 80's, and the fish are moving to the deeper waters during the middle of the day. Late afternoons and evenings are bringing these fish back in to feed on the rafts of bait fish that are filling the bay systems right now. Strong tides, lighter winds, and falling water temperatures have all combined to turn the evening bite into a feeding frenzy right now. The past two evenings have been on fire, with easy limits of trout from 18"-20", and then playing catch and release until you're ready to head in. Tuesday evening I fished for an hour before dark, then made a short wade on a nearby shoreline with gig in hand . I stuck four solid flatties in a short 45 minute walk before backtracking to the boat. Couldn't find that last one, but it was still a good evening. Book an evening trip and beat the heat, while the fishing is on fire! Great afternoon special right now for up to four people, wade fishing, with bait or lures. Call to get in on the action!

The Big Water......

Part of a four boat corporate trip this morning, and the conditions allowed for the ESCB to venture outside of the bays and into the surf. It was still a little "sporty" while we were anchored, but my group of three managed to box some solid trout to 22", along with one fat little blacktip shark that was released. The wind picked up a little, and we moved back into the bay to finish off their limit. One stop, a little adjustment, and they were done, even releasing a few more. We headed in a little before noon with a solid box of trout. As the winds continue to stay calm during August, the surf will remain the hot spot for both redfish and solid trout. Give me a call to get in on the action!

Not for lack of effort.........

Fished a group of four wonderful ladies today for the Saltwater Sweeties tournament. They were troopers from the start. Took off in the boat at 5:30 for a 45 minute boat ride in the dark. Geared up, bailed out, and made a two hour wade, dragging in fish for most of that time. They only needed two solid trout for their tournament stringer, but they had to have caught between 40-50 trout in those two hours. Some undersized, some average, and several solid trout. We met back up at the boat at 8:30. They had five around the 20" mark, but two solid ones right at 23". The old captain was scouting around and managed a solid thump, tug, and tail walk. She stretched the tape right at 28". We decided to leave the trout alone and look for their two reds. Despite lots of miles, stops, and a whole hearted effort, we couldn't find any that would eat. A little disappointing, but on any other day it was a trout bite to remember. Thanks Sam, Kim, Tammi and Terry! I enjoyed the day!

Luck of the Draw.........

Part of a five boat trip for Empire Lodge today. When I heard that one group of four wanted to wade, I was quickest on the draw to raise my hand. As an added bonus, these guys could fish too! We waded over hard sand in waist deep water, throwing croaker to sand pockets on the edges of grass beds. They filled the box with solid trout to 20", released another dozen or so, and Rodney got the big pull for the day with a bruiser redfish that came in at just under 31". It was fun to watch him play this fish in thigh deep water. Makes for a relaxing day when you get to wade, get on the fish early, and your guys can fish!

Two Firsts for the Day......

Fished in Baffin on Sunday with Darrell, his son Joe, and SIL Tom, who was visiting from Florida. We started out wading with croaker in a belly deep gut along a grass ledge. It was Tom's first time to wade fish the coastal waters of Texas. We only ended up with 10 trout in the box up to 22", but had lots of small ones mixed in. Tom actually had the hot hand for the day, adding his very first speckled trout at 20". He added a couple more to the box, then switched over to soft plastics, and caught several more small trout that inhaled a DSL in Spicy Pumpkin. Then, a little bigger thump, and he landed a very healthy 18" flounder, also a first. We didn't find the numbers of the fish we were looking for, but sometimes the memory of seeing someone experience something new makes the trip even better! Thanks Darrel, Joe, and Tom for letting me be a part of your day!

Personal Best Kind of Day......

Special day in Baffin with three customers today, Christy, Wesley, and Geoff. Wading with croaker, we had a bit of a slow start in the trout spot. Christy did, however, haul in her personal best trout at 21", and Geoff had a fat 19" flounder. After a couple of hours, we made a move to another spot. Along the way, we came right over the top of a big school of reds. I spun the boat around so we could wade back toward them, hoping they didn't spook too bad. We weren't out of the boat for two minutes before the drags started screaming. We stayed in these fish for over three hours, with multiple double and triple hook-ups! After easily finishing off their limits, and releasing at least 25+ redfish between 23"-25", the group decided to leave them for another day. In the midst of the action, Geoff landed the lone black drum, measuring right at 18". This gave him the Texas Grand Slam, having caught a redfish, trout, flounder, and black drum in the same day. Wesley caught his personal best redfish, 28-1/2", that he tagged to add to the total. We culled out a few fish at the boat, took some photos, and headed in before 1PM. Great day on the water with new customers!
