1998 Chevy Astro Van towed in for a no-start condition and for regular fleet maintenance. We spotted an issue with the lower control arms being rotted out causing the right front shock to break through the bottom of the lower control arm. Definitely a safety concern. 2012 Volvo S80 was towed into Smithtown Auto Repair (631-403-2820) today for a dead battery.

We replaced the battery and reprogrammed it to the car. The car wouldn’t start, it complained of a “Put gear selector into park”, which it was.

Pulled computer codes. Codes were “lost communication with the transmission control module”. After talking to the customer, I learned that they previously tried to jump-start the car. I think they hooked up the jumper cables wrong.

Blown 15a fuse for the transmission control module. New fuse and the car starts! The customer is happy, so I am happy!

2011 BMW 328i Comes in today for a pre-road trip inspection. The front lower control arms were in horrible shape. This is a huge safety issue. This beautiful had both control arms replaced, an oil change, and rear brake pads and rotors. The customer is on his way to a hassle-free and safe road trip.

So the vanos solenoids were bad. I forgot to record the rest of my further diagnosis. After looking up TSBs and talking to a couple of other euro tech friends, the second additional issue was in the oil filter cap. BMW is very picky with oil pressure to fuel those vanos solenoids. We also replaced the oil filter cap and o-rings during the planned oil change. Reset the engine computer adaptation values and road tested. As suspected initially, it only returned with a cylinder 1 misfire. With experience I recommended a full set of coils and plugs as I know that if 1 is failing they will all start to fail quickly after the repair.
