PROJECT OF THE WEEK | Beyond the Boat

Boating season may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean we are!

We recently installed these two custom panels at Gideon Owen, helping enclose their outdoor space as the cooler fall weather rolls in. And they turned out pretty amazing!

While marine canvas is a huge part of what we do, our custom work goes far beyond boats. Restaurants, patios, commercial spaces—if you have a space that needs protection from the elements, there’s a good chance our team can create something for it.

Because around here, custom really does mean custom.

With today being the last day of September we want to recognize September as National Sewing Month, and around here, sewing is so much more than a step in our fabrication process. It’s part of the story of how Legacy came to be.

And for Brenda, that story started long before Legacy Canvas Unlimited.

Sewing was part of her world growing up. Her mom had a sewing business, passing down not only skills, but an appreciation for creating something with your own two hands.

Brenda’s path didn’t take her straight into the sewing industry. She spent more than 20 years building a career in disability services before eventually finding her way back to something that had been woven into her story all along. After learning more about marine canvas, taking classes, and beginning to create for local boaters, Legacy Canvas Unlimited was born — right out of her garage.

Today, sewing shows up in nearly everything we do at Legacy.

Boat covers. Enclosures. Upholstery. Flooring details. Zippers. Binding. Repairs. Custom fabrication. And countless hours behind a sewing machine turning flat pieces of material into something designed specifically for the customer in front of us.

The machines have changed. The technology has changed. The projects have gotten bigger. The shop has definitely gotten bigger.

But there’s something pretty special about putting these two pictures side by side and realizing that sewing has been part of Brenda’s story for a very long time.

🦖 RAPTOR TESTED. LEGACY APPROVED.

We figured while we had a velociraptor hanging around the shop, we might as well put her to work testing something she is qualified for… durability. 😂

Custom marine canvas is made to protect your boat from some pretty tough stuff — sun, wind, rain, debris, and whatever else life on the water throws at it.

Can it survive a velociraptor? Well… you’ll have to watch and see. 👀🦖

🦖 MEET VAL, OUR NEWEST (FORMER) EMPLOYEE

September is National Sewing Month, which obviously makes a lot of sense around here. But while looking up what else September celebrates, we discovered it’s also Velociraptor Awareness Month… and it was just too ridiculous not to have a little fun with it. 😂

So, in an industry that keeps us VERY busy this time of year, we decided to lighten things up and welcome Val the Velociraptor to the Legacy Canvas team. Unfortunately, after some questionable sewing skills, a few workplace hazards, several distractions, an incident involving the shop dog, and a pretty serious case of the zoomies… we had to let Val go.

Turns out velociraptors just aren’t cut out for custom canvas. 🦖

DISCLAIMER: All footage of Val’s brief employment was filmed in a 15 minute break! No time was taken away from your projects in the making of this video. We take our canvas seriously… ourselves, maybe a little less so. 🦖😂

Not a boat cover this week!

Those giant tires on a travel lift spend a LOT of time sitting out in the sun. To help protect our customer’s investment from sun damage, we fabricated custom covers to keep all of the tires protected while they’re not in use.

Just another reminder that around here, custom canvas goes beyond boats!

It’s National Sewing Month, and around here, our kind of heavy metal sounds a little different. 😂

The hum of the machine, the needle moving, and another custom Legacy project coming together one stitch at a time. There’s something pretty satisfying about watching these machines do what they do best.

Who knew sewing could be so metal? 🤘

Sometimes custom means getting a little creative!

This 20 ft. center console needed a full cover, but the windshield and helm bars made things a little more interesting. Our solution was a two-piece, zip-together cover designed to work around everything while still being easy for the customer to use.

Another full “egg” protecting the baby! 🥚

This four-piece Sunbrella package zips together under the T-top for full protection. The coolest part? Our designer was able to digitally map the connection points, design everything in CAD, flatten the pattern and send it to our CNC plotter—all without pulling canvas or plastic onto the boat.

From digital design to fabrication, this one shows just how much goes into a truly custom fit!
