Parents: before you hand over the keys this school year 🔑
There's about to be a fresh crop of brand-new drivers on 776, Kings Highway and Toledo Blade. Most of them are driving a hand-me-down car — and hand-me-down cars come with hand-me-down problems.
Twenty minutes in the driveway this weekend covers the physical stuff:
🔹 TIRES. Tread, pressure, and don't skip the spare. Here's the one most people miss — tires age out. Florida sun cooks the rubber, so anything older than six years should go even if the tread still looks good. The date is stamped on the sidewall: last four digits are the week and year it was built.
🔹 LIGHTS. Have them stand behind the car while you hit the brakes, then the turn signals, then reverse. Two minutes, and it's the number one reason teenagers get pulled over.
🔹 WIPERS. If they streak, replace them. Our afternoon storms don't negotiate.
🔹 BATTERY. In this heat three years is old and six is borrowed time.
🔹 BRAKES. Squealing, grinding, or a pedal that pulses — handle it before, not after.
But here's the part most people skip. What your kid needs to actually know:
✅ Where the spare, jack and lug wrench are. Better yet, make them change one in the driveway this weekend. Learning it for the first time on the shoulder of 41 in the rain is a bad plan.
✅ A red dash light means stop driving now. Yellow means get it checked soon. Oil pressure and temperature are the two that turn a repair bill into a new engine when someone decides to "just try to make it home."
✅ If it overheats: A/C off, heater on full blast, pull over. It sounds insane in August. It pulls heat off the engine and it works.
✅ Never drive on a flat to get somewhere better. A tire is cheap. A wheel and hub are not.
✅ If they break down — get the car fully off the road, climb out the passenger side, and stand well away from traffic. Not beside the car. Not in front of it.
✅ Put the registration and insurance card somewhere they can find it in ten seconds, and put a tow number in their phone tonight instead of the night they need it.
And seriously — if your kid ever gets stuck and has no idea what they're looking at, they can call us at 941-766-1444 and we'll talk them through it over the phone, customer or not. Nobody should be sitting on the side of the road at sixteen trying to Google what a light on the dash means.
