Not all “HD” lifters are created equal.

A lot of lifters on the market are labeled heavy duty, but when you take them apart, they look nearly identical to stock.

In this video, you can see the difference for yourself.

KDD’s Gen2 HD Lifters feature:
• A large, heavy-duty plunger for improved stability.
• A beefier internal spring.
• A true heavy-duty snap ring instead of the factory-style wire clip.
• A high-flow metering plate that delivers more oil to the valvetrain for improved rocker arm lubrication and durability.

No marketing hype—just stronger components you can see with your own eyes.

Don’t Do This.

Not every balancing method is created equal—and this is one shortcut that should never be taken.

Pressing heavy metal into the outside edge (radially) of a crankshaft counterweight creates a serious safety hazard. At engine speed, the centrifugal forces acting on those weights are enormous. If one comes loose, the results can be catastrophic—from destroying an engine to causing an oil-down at the track or, even worse, putting spectators and drivers at risk.

Some shortcuts simply aren’t worth the risk. Safety always comes first.

Tech Tuesday | Internal vs. External Balancing

Factory Powerstroke engines are externally balanced, meaning part of the engine’s balance weight lives in the harmonic damper and flexplate. That’s perfectly acceptable for a stock engine, but as horsepower and RPM increase, those external weights create additional loads on the crankshaft—especially the crank snout.

Every Kill Devil Diesel engine starts with a brand-new Genuine Ford crankshaft. We don’t build engines around worn, previously stressed components.

For customers building high-RPM race engines—typically in the 5,000-6,000+ RPM range—we offer optional internal balancing. On this 6.7L Powerstroke, we installed 1,600 grams of Mallory heavy metal—800 grams in the front counterweights and 800 grams in the rear—to convert the engine to a true neutral internal balance, meanjng all of the weight is in tbe counterwights of thr crankshaft, and the flexplate and dampener are nuetral, no extra weights. It’s a process that requires hours of precision machining and a significant investment in materials, but the results speak for themselves.

The payoff is a smoother, stronger, and more stable rotating assembly with reduced stress on the crankshaft, bearings, and engine block at elevated RPM.

These engines are also paired with a neutral-balance fluid damper and neutral-balance billet flexplate, and every KDD 6.7 crankshaft has the crank gear TIG welded for maximum reliability.

These are the details you’ll never see once the engine is assembled—but they’re exactly what separates a good engine from one engineered to survive at the highest level.

🔧 Tech Tuesday: Why We Resurface Every Block

One of the biggest reasons 6.0 Powerstrokes become repeat head gasket failures isn’t just the gasket itself—it’s also the block surface.

At Kill Devil Diesel, every engine block is CNC resurfaced as a standard part of our build process. In this video, we’re taking a light .002” pass, and you can already see low spots leftover that prove why simply “cleaning it up” with a wizz wheel isn’t enough.

Our state-of-the-art CNC equipment holds tolerances down to .0001” (one tenth of one thousandth of an inch), while our CBN (cubic boron nitride) cutter produces an exceptionally consistent finish without heating the block like traditional stone resurfacing. Because the heat stays in the chips—not the block—we avoid localized expansion that can compromise flatness.

Modern MLS head gaskets demand a smooth, controlled surface finish. Every block is verified with our Mitutoyo profilometer, targeting less than 20 RA for optimum gasket sealing and long-term reliability.

It’s details like these that have helped earn Kill Devil Diesel a reputation for reliable, leak-free head gasket performance—whether you’re towing, daily driving, or making four-digit horsepower.

The devil’s in the details.
