Last week, FHG Marine Engineering, Inc.'s Senior Engineer Dr. Travis Wallace, a former maritime academy engineering professor, returned to the lectern as an invited guest speaker at the Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club members’ dinner. He spoke to 45 attendees about the auxiliary diesel, the heart of the boat when the wind won’t cooperate. ⛵

Some of the topics Travis covered:
⚓ What makes a sailboat's auxiliary engine different from a powerboat diesel, and how it ties into your fuel, cooling, charging, and propulsion systems
⚓ Why an engine that runs only now and then needs its own kind of care
⚓ Which jobs you can comfortably take on yourself and when it's time to call a diesel mechanic, whether you cruise or race
⚓ The most common mistakes we see and the few things that matter most
⚓ How solar, lithium batteries, and bigger alternators are changing the way we make power on board
⚓ What to ask about the engine, before buying a 10- to 15-year-old sailboat

Thank you to the Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club Facebook Group for their warm hospitality and the thoughtful questions from members.

Sharing what we know is part of how we serve the boating community. As an authorized Yanmar service provider, we're always happy to help sailors keep their engines ready for the day the breeze drops. Fair winds, everyone!

Growth is about more than expanding a business—it’s about bringing great people together.

A few weekends ago, the FHG Marine Engineering, Inc. and Scott Marine Power teams took some time away from the day-to-day to connect, have some fun, and celebrate an exciting new chapter.

Following FHG’s recent acquisition of Scott Marine Power, our Annual Company Summer Family BBQ was a chance to recognize the hard work and dedication of both teams, while building new relationships along the way. Between the food, games, laughs, and a few water fights 💦 , it was a great reminder that a strong company is built by the people behind it.

As FHG continues to grow, we remain committed to investing in our people, recognizing their hard work, and building a team culture where people can succeed and grow together.

We’re excited for what’s ahead—and proud of the team that will get us there.

Leadership doesn't just happen from behind a desk at FHG Marine Engineering, Inc. 🛠️

This summer, our Service Manager, Falk, traded the office for coveralls, working alongside our engineers, vessel crew, and shipyard personnel in Washington, during a major overhaul of a pair of Deutz TBD604BV8 marine diesel engines. These heavy-duty, 4-stroke engines have powered yachts and commercial vessels around the world for decades—well known for their durability and service life, when properly maintained.

As the North American distributor for Quantiparts BV legacy engine product lines, projects involving classic Deutz MWM engines are a natural fit for our team. Combining technical support, field service expertise, and OEM parts allows us to help Vessel Owners keep these proven engines running reliably for years to come.

With decades of hands-on marine engineering experience, having senior leadership directly involved in the work brings tremendous value. As inspections and disassembly progressed, the team identified additional items requiring corrective action—issues that may have otherwise remained hidden until becoming much larger problems in the future.

One key milestones included the successful removal of two crankshafts for further assessment and refurbishment, requiring careful planning and ex*****on, due to space and access constraints onboard.

Projects like these are a reminder that successful overhauls are built on thorough inspections, attention to detail, and a commitment to doing the job right the first time. Taking the time to properly assess equipment and address concerns early helps improve reliability and ensures our customers get the maximum value (and enjoyment!) from their assets.
