Pandora’s box. 🎁 A returning customer brought us this 05’ GSXR 600 after purchasing it from a rather “Notorious” dealership in West Palm. He was told that it only had a bad fuel pump. We said not a problem, we can rebuild your stock one. ✅1st: We removed the fuel pump to find out that the fuel pump was an empty shell. None of the needed parts to rebuild it were there. Fine, we replaced the entire pump with a rebuilt unit. ✅2nd: Acid washed the rusty gas tank and lined it. ✅3rd: Rebuilt the front forks, changed the plugs, oil & filter. Installed the windscreen correctly since someone thought it should mount on the outside of the upper fairing.🙄 ✅4th: Got the bike back together along with the replacement pump….but the bike wouldn’t start. 🤔 ✅5th: After testing a few items & seeing that there was both fuel pressure & spark we determined that the fuel injectors were not actually firing/opening. So we traced the wiring back and found that this issue was the ECU. ✅6th: We replaced the ECU and the bike still wouldn’t start, BUT now the injectors were actually firing. HOORAH! Now we saw a trouble code which appeared to indicate that the throttle position sensor was out of range. Okay, we went to the TPS, corrected a hack job of wiring that someone did & adjusted the TPS back to OEM specs. Hit that start button and…💥💥 It’s ALIVE! 💥💥 Talk about putting skills to a test. After all is said and done we believe the entire issue with this bike started at the ECU. Very possibly it was misdiagnosed as a bad fuel pump when in reality the ECU had gone bad & wasn’t firing the injectors causing someone who doesn’t know how to properly troubleshoot a bike to think there wasn’t fuel pressure. Just proves how valuable it is to research a motorcycle technician prior to letting them touch your bike. 🔥
