There’s a dangerous lack of visibility into the towing industry and that lack of understanding has real consequences for public safety, from governments making public policies and laws to cities and states contracting these companies.
There are so many "invisible" costs when running a professional tow business the average person does not see.
âś… Trucks: Like everything else, the costs of trucks has skyrocketed in recent years, from tens of thousands of dollars to over a million dollars.
âś…Specialized Equipment: No two jobs are the same, and that is why companies need a fleet of trucks, from light duty wreckers, to rotators, able to handle large recoveries involving semis.
âś… Proper uniforms and high-vis gear: By law, operators must wear certain high vis gear and it isn't cheap. In addition, items like gloves, pants, boots and hats must be provided to ensure they have the protection to complete a job. And in climates with extreme heat and cold, this requires even more specialized uniforms.
âś… Straps, chains, dollies and many other small parts and equipment inspected and replaced constantly due to wear and tear.
âś… Fuel and truck maintenance to ensure they run smoothly. Tow trucks are not just "trucks", they often have hydraulic components and additional parts like PTO (power take off) to support specialized parts
âś… Insurance can be tens of thousands of dollars a year for a single truck and this is for a tow operator with zero claims. This is simply due to the danger of the job combined with the cost of the equipment
âś…Training, education and testing: Even the most "simple" hook up requires an operator to be properly trained. Proper training ensures a job is done correctly, protecting the operator, the customer and the environment
âś…Proper Clean Up: Oil and fuel spills can be detrimental to local environment. Small debris also needs be removed from roadways.
âś…Cameras and truck tracking to provide up to date information to customers and transport officials and law enforcement.
âś… The cost of a secure, well-maintained yard to keep stored vehicles safe and secure and staff and procedures to treat your residents with professionalism when they come to retrieve their vehicles
âś…Relationships with local law enforcement and fire departments as these all often work together to ensure public safety. This can include group trainings, meetings and constant flow of communication.
When towing companies are left out of the process and not consulted, the public loses.
For effective policies, from small municipalities to the national stage, we must do the work to understand what a good towing company actually looks like and the true costs of their business and the value of their services.
This is a true investment in public safety.
