In Memory of Motorcycle Mike

Yesterday I finally installed the seats in my Suzuki Samurai, “Mutt.” Today I called Motorcycle Mike to thank him and send him pictures, only to learn that he had passed away.

Mike and I met through Facebook Marketplace. I lived about 400 miles away, and he told me he would hold the seats until I could make the trip. These days, that’s almost unheard of.

When I finally got there, we hit it off right away. I tried to pay him for the seats, but he refused to take a penny. Instead, he told me, “Use that money to do something nice for someone in need.”

I’ll never forget that.

I didn’t know Mike for long, but his kindness made a lasting impression on me. Every time I sit in those seats and drive Mutt, I’ll think of him and the lesson he left behind: kindness is worth more than money.

Thank you, Motorcycle Mike. I’ll do my best to honor your wish and pay it forward.

One of the nicest ways to honor him would be exactly what he asked—find someone who needs a hand and quietly help them, expecting nothing in return. That would keep a little piece of Motorcycle Mike’s kindness alive.

May he rest in peace, and may every mile you put on Mutt remind you that even brief encounters can leave lifelong memories.
