So it’s taken me a few days to collect my thoughts and sort through my emotions. Our phenomenal customers at AAMCO and friends collected supplies for Asheville NC after hurricane helene hit. On Wednesday Oct 9th 2024 Brad and I and our neighbor Felicia Rodriguez Walsh drove up to Asheville to deliver these supplies and to volunteer with Samaritan's Purse. I knew that it was going to be an emotional day but that was the understatement of the century!!!
The devastation is real! The power of water is insane! The amount of volunteers, the amount of donations, the amount of tears and the amount of smiles are unmeasurable. We helped out at three houses in Swannanoa, North Carolina that were flooded, gutting them, spraying for mold and speaking and praying with the homeowners. The one homeowner had her daughter with her to help and we packed up her house, moved furniture, stripped walls and floors. Second house had 90 year old Jacquie. To say she was in shock is inadequate. Her house had been flooded and left two feet of sludge behind. Fortunately for her she had just moved to a retirement village. Third house - perhaps had the most heartbreaking story - we met Caleb who was the grandson of the owners (aged 90 and 92) they were in bed when the river burst its banks. They were stuck in their bed for the next 24 hours as the water and sludge rushed around them. Caleb eventually managed to make his way to them on Saturday and took them back to his house. He then spent the next 9 days helping neighbors and clearing out his grandparents house.
So much was seen, so much was lost; but let me tell you the homeowners still had a smile on their faces and a sense of humor. This is going to be a long road to recovery for Asheville and its surrounding area. We will be going up to help Samaritan’s Purse U.S. Disaster Relief every two weeks. They need feet and hands now more than they need donations. Please consider signing up and helping. People have lost their homes, their businesses and now they are without water and electricity for the foreseeable future. My heart was broken into a million pieces and then glued back together with every hug and smile and connection that was made. This has changed not only the lives of those impacted but the lives of those helping to put it back together. May God be with us all!
