We are seeing this more and more in our shop and across our industry as a whole. Just this week we had a similar situation. The adjuster stated that he did not care and would not make it right and we should just have the customer foot the bill they are obligated to pay. If you haven't had a claim in several years, you might be shocked at how an insurer treats you the next time you need them.

Insurers increasingly deny reimbursements and call it "following policy". Shops must push back against these small changes before they become tomorrow's standard.

When insurers push you toward their "preferred" shops they make it sound like it's for your good. Here are the facts. This is a preliminary estimate written by a preferred shop for our customers insurance company. This particular insurer pays our shop rate of $70 per hour but the preferred shop is contracted to charge less. You will also notice the 3.4% discount off of the total repair bill. It's not about quality repairs. It's about cheap repairs. And as we all know, you get what you pay for.

Truth for today

In collision repair, there is no such thing as INDUSTRY STANDARD REPAIRS. There is either the proper way based on the manufacturers guidelines or there is hack work. The insurance industry created the term in an attempt to have consumers settle for sub standard repair quality by stating that what they want to pay for is generally accepted and the "standard." They love to say that they only owe for the "industry standard" even though it doesn't exist. In contrast, the state of Mississippi says they owe for a proper repair. We won't lie and tell anyone that getting an insurer to pay you what they owe will be easy, but we will say it's worth it.

It's the little things that make the biggest difference. Last year we invested in a system that allows us to replicate OEM seam sealers and we are glad we did. These Tahoe doors look better than they did when they left the factory.

Consumers need to understand insurance trends and tactics when navigating the claims process.

Increases of 30 to 40% in out-of-pocket expenses for a customer over four to six months are not normal. Andrew Batenhorst, shop manager at Pacific BMW Collision Center, says he has had many conversations with local claims management to try to find out what triggered these changes. The number one response he gets is that they are not achieving a tolerable subrogation recovery rate.
