Hughes Performance

Hughes Performance Designers, developers, and manufacturers of custom torque converters, transmissions, and components. Hughes Performance was founded in 1971.

Founder Bill Hughes, Sr. began the humble beginnings of this company in a small shop that rebuilt OEM torque converters. Bill's son Jim Hughes took interest in the design and engineering of torque converters for racing purposes. Jim's involvement in the company took Hughes Performance to the next level, and resulted in a dynamic change within the company that quickly elevated Hughes Performance to

the upper echelon of high performance and racing torque converter manufacturing. The time came for Hughes to jump into the transmission side of the industry. Enter Bill's son Jeff Hughes. With Jeff's in-depth understanding of automatic transmission function as well as his machining abilities Hughes Performance enjoyed immediate success in the high performance and racing transmission market. Today Hughes Performance employs over 40 people and continues to proudly manufacture the finest torque converters and transmissions currently available in the aftermarket.

🚨🌏 NEW WORLD RECORD ALERT 🚨 🌏

HUGHES shoutout to our friend across the pond, Ben Mace 🇬🇧 on resetting the Audi 1.8L record with a 7.296 @ 183.58MPH 🏁

This Rowdy Audi powered altered was built by the good people over at Hauser Race Cars, and with this only being Ben’s 14th full pass on the car we’re all pretty excited to see what numbers are to come as Ben & crew continue hitting the ⬆️ arrow and adding all the boost

Ben relies on one of our Pro Series 8” bolt together converters to help propel this rocket ship (peep that 60’ 👀). We couldn’t be more honored to help play a small role in such a big achievement, congratulations again Ben!

Why You Should Refresh Your Converter – Don’t Let Bearings and Races Bring You Down!

Your torque converter is the unsung hero of your drivetrain — but like all high-performance components, it doesn’t last forever.

Over time, the bearings and races inside your converter experience wear and tear from heat, fluid pressure, and the constant stress of high-RPM applications. If left unchecked, this internal wear can lead to decreased performance, increased slippage, and even catastrophic failure.

🏁 Here's why regular converter maintenance is crucial:

Preventative Protection: Refreshing your converter before a failure helps protect your transmission and drivetrain from costly collateral damage.

Performance Consistency: Worn bearings can affect converter stall speed and torque multiplication. Keeping internals fresh ensures you're getting the performance you paid for.

Longer Lifespan: Regular servicing extends the life of your converter and keeps your car on the track or street longer without unexpected downtime.

💡 Pro Tip: If you’ve logged multiple race seasons or thousands of miles in your street/strip car, it’s time to consider sending your converter in for a refresh. It’s a small investment that can save you big in the long run.

At Hughes Performance, we offer full converter inspections, rebuilds, and refresh services. Keep your setup tight and your performance right.

Our Story

Hughes Performance was founded in 1971 by Bill Hughes, Sr. Our humble beginnings started in a small shop with our sole focus on remanufacturing of OEM torque converters. Bill's son, Jim Hughes, took interest in the design and engineering of torque converters for racing purposes. Jim's involvement in the company took Hughes Performance to the next level, and resulted in a dynamic change within the company that quickly elevated Hughes Performance to the upper echelon of high performance and racing torque converter manufacturing. When the time came for Hughes to jump into the transmission side of the industry, Jeff Hughes stepped in to provide in-depth understanding of automatic transmission function as well as first-class machining abilities. As a result, Hughes Performance enjoyed immediate success in the high performance and racing transmission market. Today Hughes Performance employs 38 people. Under the business ownership & leadership of Jeff Hughes, Hughes Performance continues to proudly manufacture the finest torque converters and transmissions currently available in the aftermarket.
