SUMMER IS HERE! In the valley you can definitely feel the triple digit weather. I often tell my customers “God Bless AC!” :-)
The summer heat can make your car unbearable to drive, which is why air conditioning was introduced into vehicles as far back as around 1940. Originally considered a ‘Luxury’, nowadays (especially here in Arizona) it is viewed more as a ‘necessity’.
What does air conditioning do?
Air conditioning has two main purposes:
• Cools the air entering the passenger compartment
• Removes the moisture from the air so it feels more comfortable inside the vehicle.
In many makes, air conditioning cycles automatically when the defrost setting is chosen. It pulls the humidity from the windshield to improve your visibility. Often cold air is not required when the defrost setting is selected, which is why it is important to know that air conditioning functions even when the heat is selected on the heater control.
How does air conditioning work?
Air conditioning systems operate in much the same manner in almost all vehicles. Some common components are:
- Compressor
- Condenser
- Expansion valve or orifice tube
- Receiver, drier, or accumulator
- Evaporator
The air conditioning system is pressurized by a gas known as refrigerant. Each vehicle specifies how much refrigerant is used to fill the system, and is usually three or four pounds at most in passenger vehicles.
The compressor compresses the refrigerant from a gaseous state into a fluid. Then the fluid is cycled through a refrigerant line. Because it is under high pressure, this is called the high side. The next procedure occurs in the condenser. The refrigerant flows through a grid similar to a radiator. Air passes through the condenser and removes the heat from the refrigerant. The refrigerant then moves on next to the expansion valve, or orifice tube. A valve or restriction in the tube reduces the pressure in the line and the refrigerant returns to a gaseous state. Next, the refrigerant enters the receiver drier, or accumulator. Here, a desiccant in the receiver drier removes moisture that is carried in with the refrigerant in gas form. After the receiver drier, the cooler, drier refrigerant passes into the evaporator, still in its gaseous form. The evaporator is the only part of the air conditioning system that is actually in the passenger compartment. Air is blown through the evaporator core, and the heat is removed from the air and transferred into the refrigerant, leaving cooler air exiting past the evaporator. After that the refrigerant cycles through to the compressor again. The process continues repeatedly.

Hi all,

Many wonder why some shops will recommend that you replace your engine mounts (while other shops will tell you they are fine). If the vehicle has over 70K miles, chances are that your engine mounts are worn and merit replacement. Why would some shops tell you NOT to replace them? This is frankly due to lack of proper training. Many mechanics don't recommend replacing mounts unless they are visibly BROKEN. However they actually should have been replaced LONG before that time.
Look at the 2 engine mounts in this picture... They are the exact same part number. The one on the right is about 8 years old, and the one on the left is new. What do you notice? You can clearly see that the used mount is collapsed (over an inch difference in height between the two). This causes multiple issues, such as misalignment of the drivetrain, excessive Up/Down movement as you get on and off the accelerator which, in turn, causes excessive 'tugging' on wire harnesses, vacuum hoses, and even coolant hoses. All of this excessive movement causes these associated parts to wear prematurely. It is also often felt by the driver as an irritating vibration whenever he/she is waiting at a red light, etc.
At AUTOTECH TRANSMISSIONS we ARE multiple Dealership trained and ASE Certified. We are professionals with an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. We can inspect your vehicle and let you know what areas merit attention (both short term and long term). We are a FULL SERVICE repair facility, which means we are trained to diagnose and repair anything from Transmissions to Engines, from AC to Brakes, From complicated electrical issues to normal maintenance... We can handle it! Give us a call at 480-256-8866 or email us at [email protected] with any questions or to schedule a visit.

Timing Belts are often overlooked by many drivers. Most manufacturers recommend having them inspected after 50,000 miles, and replaced between 60,000 - 100,000 (depending on make/model)... This is considered necessary maintenance if you want to avoid major repairs. The pics below are from a 2005 Kia that had only 52,000 miles! The teeth literally fell off of the belt! This customer had to learn this lesson the hard way (it cost her her engine). :-(
AUTOTECH TRANSMISSIONS is a Full Service Repair Facility, capable of caring for all of your vehicle's needs, from scheduled maintenance to transmissions and engine repair/replacement. Dealership quality service at a reasonable price!

Customer complains that engine has no power... It MIGHT have something to do with the fact that the inside of his catalytic converter looks like freshly poured asphalt! ;-) (Replaced the cat. converter and SHAZAAM we have power again!) Customer THOUGHT he needed a $2000 engine repair, instead spent about $500. That's how you gain a customer's trust and respect.
