It’s probably a sight you see frequently — a car off to the side of the road with smoke coming from its hood.
The cause: An overheated engine.
Overheated engines are most often caused because of an issue with your car’s engine coolant, whose job is circulate through the engine and radiator to keep them cool in the summer. Antifreeze coolant passes through the engine block to absorb and transfer heat.
Because an issue with your cooling system can cause damage or complete failure to your engine, mechanics recommend adding a cooling system service to your car’s regular maintenance schedule.
The benefits [of a cooling system service] are it removes corrosive contaminants from the cooling system that can cause gaskets and other components ... to fail or start to leak, causing untimely and expensive repairs
What is a coolant flush?
A coolant flush, also referred to as a cooling system service or radiator flush, is the process of adding a cleaner to the cooling system to eliminate sediment or rust. The system is then flushed thoroughly while new antifreeze and a conditioner to protect against corrosion are added.
We definitely recommend this service to prolong the life of the cooling system and its components, such as radiators, heater cores, hoses, coolant pipes, water pumps and gaskets.
A flush differs from topping off the coolant because harmful contaminants are flushed out of the cooling system completely while new, clean fluid is added.
How often do you need a coolant flush?
As a general rule, a coolant service is recommended about every 30,000 miles, or every three years.
We can accurately test coolant to identify if the coolant is dirty and corrosive. It’s a good thing to have your coolant checked by our highly trained technicians each oil change or inspection interval
Simply waiting for your temperature gauge to indicate a problem can lead to “catastrophic effects” on the engine.
Flushing your coolant is realistically the only way to maintain that system and, unfortunately, that is a service rarely practiced at the right time
Electrolysis is caused by a chemical reaction between coolant and metal surfaces and over time can lead to the deterioration of the entire cooling system if it’s not flushed
