Most people think the oil filter is just a cheap afterthought, but putting a low-quality filter on high-end synthetic oil completely defeats the purpose.

A steady check engine light means something is off. A blinking check engine light means something is actively getting damaged right now, usually a misfire that is sending unburned fuel into your catalytic converter and cooking it.

That distinction matters a lot.

A steady light could be a loose gas cap, a sensor getting lazy, a dozen things that are worth checking but not worth pulling over for. A blinking light means stop driving, get it looked at, do not pass go. Every mile you put on it with that light flashing is potentially turning a small job into a much bigger one.

The thing most shops will not tell you is that a misfire code does not automatically mean you need new ignition coils on every cylinder. A lot of places will recommend replacing all of them as a set because it is easy labor and easy to justify, but if one coil failed and the rest test fine there is no rule that says the others are about to follow. Sometimes one coil just lost the lottery.

Get it scanned, get it diagnosed properly, and make sure whoever is looking at it actually tests the parts before replacing them. A code tells you where to start looking, not what to replace.

Oh yeah, that's almost certainly your serpentine belt. It's a rubber belt that drives a bunch of stuff under the hood like your power steering, alternator, AC compressor, and when it gets old or glazed over it loses grip on the pulleys, especially when everything is cold. Once the engine warms up and the belt gets a little heat in it the squeal usually fades, which is why you mostly notice it first thing.

It's not an emergency today but don't ignore it either.

Sometimes it's just the belt tensioner losing spring pressure and the belt itself is fine, sometimes the belt is cracked and dried out and ready to snap. If it does snap you're looking at losing power steering and your alternator all at once which means you're pulling over real quick. The fix is one of the more affordable things you can do on a car so it's worth getting it looked at before a simple swap turns into a tow bill and a bigger repair. Swing by and we can tell you in about two minutes what's going on.

In most cases you can safely drive a short distance to get it checked, but if the light is flashing, pull over and call for a tow because that usually means a misfire that can destroy your catalytic converter in minutes.

A steady check engine light covers a huge range of possibilities, from a loose gas cap to a failing sensor to an emissions issue that won't leave you stranded but will get worse if you wait weeks. The light itself doesn't tell you severity, only a code reader can narrow it down, and even then the code points to a system not a specific broken part.

Don't assume it's nothing.

We can pull the codes, interpret what they actually mean in context, and give you a straight answer about what needs attention now versus what can be monitored for a while.
