The first motorcycles were born when folks with an engineering bent took what was then called the safety bicycle, bolted a single-cylinder engine inside the diamond frame, incorporated a fuel tank and a leather drive belt, and they were motorcycling.

Riding those first machines was a completely engaging and entirely manual affair in every way. Throttle, spark advance, engine lubrication, heck even pedaling to get up a hill, were all operated by the rider.

How different things are today.

Oregon brought the full experience: rainy rides, chilly mornings, campfires, new friends, familiar faces, and plenty of time spent exploring the PNW on two wheels.

Itā€™s easy enough to take one look at Royal Enfieldā€™s Bear 650 and declare that it isnā€™t a good scrambler. How is it supposed to ā€œscrambleā€ when the exhaust is dangling down under the engine and the suspension isnā€™t tall enough? And yet it might be the truest interpretation of a scrambler available today.

For starters, the recipe is correct. Scramblers are modified street bikes, after all, or at least thatā€™s how they started. As the tree of motorcycling grew new branches over the course of the 20th century, off-road machines sprouted in a few different directions. For a brief period ā€” before true dirt bikes proliferated and created a market of their own ā€” full-sized, road-going motorcycles were crudely modified to create quasi-off-road contraptions.

Leading the way is a Royal Enfield Bear 650 build by Australia's Black Cycles that blurs the line between form and function. Second, German builder Rind Performance creates a pork-themed BMW R80RT homage to one of Porsche's most iconic Le Mans race cars. And last, but certainly not least, is a Kawasaki ZRX1200 built for the galaxy's most infamous Dark Lord by French builder Jerem Motorcycles.

Billy Joelā€™s two-wheeled fascination started in his teenage years, but he only seriously took up motorcycling after finding success in the late 1970s. That obsession segued into business when Joel opened his Long Island-based motorcycle shop and gallery, 20th Century Cycles, in 2010.
