US probes whether Tesla Autopilot recall did enough to make sure drivers pay attention
The U.S. government’s auto safety agency is investigating whether last year’s recall of Tesla’s Autopilot driving system did enough to make sure drivers pay attention to the road. DETROIT -- The U.S. government's auto safety agency is investigating whether last year's recall of Tesla's Autopilot driving system did enough to make sure drivers pay attention to the road.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents posted on its website Friday that Tesla has reported 20 more crashes involving Autopilot and since the recall. The crashes and agency tests raised concerns about the effectiveness of the remedy. The recall involved more than 2 million vehicles, nearly all the vehicles that Tesla had sold at the time.

Ford recalls nearly 43,000 vehicles over fuel leaks that increase fire risk
Ford Motor Co. is recalling tens of thousands of small SUVs over concerns cracked fuel injectors could leak, increasing the risk of sparking a fire in engines.
A notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the recall is for certain 2022-2023 Bronco Sport and 2022 Escape models with 1.5-liter engines, totaling 42,652 vehicles. The NHTSA notice said Ford is addressing the issue by having dealers update the affected vehicles' engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection and installing a drain tube.

Short-Circuit-Shifting: Toyota recalling 156,000 vehicles for rear doors that may open while driving
Toyota has announced that it is recalling over 156,000 vehicles in Canada, Japan, Europe and Asia over concerns that its rear doors may open unexpectedly.
The recall specifically affects Toyota’s 2023 to 2024 Prius and Prius hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs), and has to do with concerns that water may enter and cause the rear door latches to short circuit and open while the vehicle is moving. According to the Daily Mail, Toyota mentioned the issue in a recall notice, but did not disclose whether any accidents have been reported regarding the current issue.

Ford Issues Recall for 43,000 SUVs Due to Leaky Fuel Injectors That Could Cause Fires
Ford is recalling 43,000 Escape and Bronco Sport SUVs due to a fuel injector leak that might catch fire.
According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, these automobiles' 1.5-liter engines are problematic. Fuel injector issues may allow v***r or gasoline to infiltrate near hot engine parts, starting fires.
The Ford recall covers Bronco Sport SUVs (2022-2023 models) and Escape SUVs (2022 model). All possess 1.5-liter engines, per ABC News.

BMW and Rimac Technology partner on future high-voltage battery tech
As with all trends, different manufacturers are experiencing different fortunes during the current EV vicissitudes. After an expensive learning and adaptation stage with the first i3, BMW finds itself on the high side currently, deliveries of the i4, iX1, and i7 up 41% in the first quarter of the year and the Munich automaker projecting 20% of its global deliveries in 2024 will be battery-electric. Hitting the 20% target would be a 5% gain over 2023. Continuing to look to the future, BMW announced it has signed a long-term partnership with Rimac Technology to "co-develop and co-produce innovative solutions in field of high-voltage battery technology for selected battery-electric vehicles." This means high-voltage (800 volts or more) packs and architectures for future BMW products, neither automaker hinting at what those products might be.
And to clarify the connection, Rimac Technology is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Rimac Group. The tech division, more than ten years old, has become an EV engineering supplier for various automakers; it helped with the hybrid battery system in the Aston Martin Valkyrie, produced the pack in the Koenigsegg Regera and the powertrain in the Pininfarina Battista, and worked with Jaguar Classic Works on the E-Type Zero.

Why Aren’t There Solar-Powered Cars?
Solar cars exist. The best place to see them is the World Solar Challenge, a race that’s held every two years in Australia. Competitors have to drive about 1,870 miles (3,000 kilometers), from Darwin on the country’s north coast to Adelaide on its south coast, using only energy from the Sun.
Many cars that compete in this race look more like amusement park rides or science fiction vehicles than the cars you see on the road. That tells you something about why solar cars aren’t an option for everyday travel, at least not yet.

NHTSA investigating 2014 Ford-150 unexpected downshifting; Chrysler recalls over air bags
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating 86 complaints of the 2014 Ford F-150 unexpectedly downshifting.
The investigation follows recalls of the 2011-2013 models of the Ford F-150 in 2016 and 2019 for similar concerns. NHTSA documents say the recent complaints involve the vehicle abruptly slowing down without warning after the downshift. “The unexpectant downshift can also result in rear wheel lock-up and/or skidding, increasing the risk of a crash and/or injury,” the documents say.

Subaru recalling over 118K vehicles for airbag deployment issues
Subaru is recalling more than 118,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to an issue that could prevent the airbags from deploying during a crash, according to a federal safety regulator.
Certain Outback and Legacy vehicles that were manufactured between 2020 and 2022 are being recalled because a capacitor in the sensors for the Occupant Detection System (ODS) may crack and short circuit, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said. The NHTSA warned that the issue can "prevent the front passenger airbag from deploying in a crash."

Chrysler recalls 286,000 vehicles over airbag concerns
Chrysler is recalling around 286,000 vehicles over concerns that the side airbag inflators in the cars may rupture, which could hurt or even kill people.
According to separate notices posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recalls involve certain Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 vehicles from model years 2018-2021, and replacement parts for airbags in roughly 1,000 vehicles. The notices state that the side curtain airbag inflators may rupture, which "may result in sharp metal fragments striking occupants, resulting in injury or death."

Kia recalls over 427K vehicles that could roll away while in park
The warning, posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, covers all Telluride vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2023 as well as some 2024 models.
NHTSA warned that the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft on the vehicles "may not be fully engaged due to suspected improper assembly by the supplier."

Hyundai, Kia to Recall EVs in U.S. Over Charging Unit Issues
The South Korean carmakers last week recalled around 170,000 electric vehicles in South Korea over the same issue
Hyundai Motor 005380 -3.30%decrease; red down pointing triangle and sibling company Kia 000270 -3.68%decrease; red down pointing triangle will recall a combined 147,110 electric vehicles in the U.S. over possible defects in a charging unit that could cause a loss of power while running, the U.S. federal auto safety regulator said.
Hyundai will recall 98,878 vehicles of certain Ioniq and Genesis brands, while Kia will recall 48,232 units of its affected EV6 vehicle model, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement Thursday.

Google Luck Explaining This Android Auto Bug Breaking Down the World's Top Messaging App
Let's be honest about it: Android Auto is far from the reliable and stable application that we need in our cars, and given the plethora of bugs, the only thing we can do is report the unusual behavior to Google, hoping it'd develop patches.
The most recent issue nobody can explain affects the world's number one messaging app. WhatsApp, which everybody uses to send messages and call contacts over the Internet, no longer feels at home on Android Auto. The audio messages users receive are no longer read correctly, despite Google Assistant claiming it starts playing the received message.
