It's 2006 and the Miata's third generation arrives the same year the PlayStation 3 launches to lines around the block, Nintendo's Wii has people waving their arms around living rooms everywhere, and Dunkin' Donuts overtakes Starbucks as America's favorite coffee stop. The NC was bigger and heavier than its predecessors, and purists had opinions.

But underneath the new shape was the same idea: even weight distribution, a chassis built to talk to the driver, and nothing there that didn't need to be. Twenty years on, plenty of NCs are still doing exactly what they were built for.

NC owners, what won you over?

There was a time when Mazda had to convince people that the Miata was the return of the classic roadster. This 1992 ad makes a pretty good case for it.

“Top-down driving,” winding roads, a tuned exhaust, a short-throw shifter, and a 1.6-liter engine. The pitch was simple: find a good road and go drive.

Then there’s the car itself: bright yellow, pop-up headlights, tiny proportions, and the classic NA lines. It looks exactly like the kind of car that would turn a quick drive into an afternoon with nowhere particular to be!

The ad calls it a “second golden age” for the roadster. More than three decades later, the NA Miata is still one of the cars people point to when they talk about simple, affordable sports cars done right.
Not a bad prediction for 1992. 💛

British Racing Green with a tan interior. 3,000 built. Even by Miata special edition standards, the 2001 SE is a moment.

Mazda draped it in BRG paint with a tan top and tan leather seats, then finished the cabin with a Nardi wood steering wheel, matching wood shift k**b, and wood hand brake handle. 16" polished alloys, a Bose stereo, cruise control, A/C, and remote entry rounded it out. Under the hood: the 1.8L with a 6-speed manual and Torsen limited slip diff.

Only 3,000 made, each one numbered. It's still one of the most sought-after NB special editions out there, and it's easy to see why.

British racing heritage never looked this good on an American roadster. Which era of Miata SE is your favorite?

Every Miata owner has one: a stretch of road they think about more than they'd probably admit; the one they'd choose over any other if today was the only day left to drive it.

Maybe it's twenty minutes from home and you've driven it a hundred times. Maybe it's somewhere you only get to once a year. Either way, you know exactly which corner is which.

That's the whole point of this car. It was never built to get you somewhere fast. It was built to make you want the long way round.

Tell us yours. Where's the one road you'd pick, every time?

You know you own a Miata when every mechanic you meet has a story about their own.

When you've timed how fast you can get the top down and back up before it starts pouring.

When "is that a Miata?" gets asked at every single gas stop.

When you've been asked if it's a kit car more times than you can count.

Finish the sentence. You know you own a Miata when...

Picture yourself in 1998, and this is waiting in your mailbox.

Inside is the next generation of Mazda's already legendary roadster.

The pop-up headlights are gone, the styling is smoother, and everything about the brochure points to one idea. This isn't a completely different Miata. It's a better one.

Mazda didn't try to reinvent what made the original special. Instead, they refined it. A stiffer chassis. Improved handling. More comfort. The same lightweight, rear-wheel-drive balance that made every drive feel connected.

Looking back, it's easy to see why the NB became such a favorite among enthusiasts. It kept the spirit of the original NA while making it an even better sports car to drive every day.

More than 25 years later, the NB proves that great cars don't always need a complete redesign. Sometimes the best approach is simply making a great idea even better.

If you were opening this brochure in 1998, would you have missed the pop-up headlights, or would you have been ready for the next generation?

Mazda gave the Miata a hardtop that folds itself away.

The NC PRHT was the first Miata with a power retractable hardtop, a two-piece design that stows in the same space as the standard soft top. It only added about 80 pounds, so none of that classic Miata balance got lost in the process.

Closed, it's quieter, more secure, and better sealed against the weather. Open, it's every bit as good as the soft top ever was. Available across Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trims, with the 2.0L engine and a 6-speed manual or automatic with paddle shifters.

A true four-season sports car, and proof Mazda could reinvent the Miata without losing what made it the Miata.

Are you a soft top purist, or on team PRHT?

1999 - The Miata got its second generation the same year the world braced for the millennium bug, Ricky Martin's "Livin' la Vida Loca" was inescapable on American radio, Napster quietly started upending how people listened to music, and The Matrix and The Phantom Menace drove everyone to the cinema.

The NB kept the formula that made the original work and quietly sharpened it. Stiffer chassis, sealed headlights, a little more power, none of it changing what the car was actually for.

There are some things from 1999 you might rather forget. This isn't one of them. Which generation did you learn to drive stick in?

Meet the 1993 Miata LE, the most loaded Miata of its era.

Black paint, red leather, red tonneau, black top. It's a color combo Mazda only used this one time on the NA, and it's still one of the best-looking Miatas ever built.

Inside and out, this was the fully loaded Miata. Nardi shift k**b. 14" BBS wheels. Bilstein-equipped sport suspension. Limited slip diff. Mazda Sensory Sound System with CD player. Front air dam, rear spoiler, rear skirt, A/C, ABS. Every box on the A and B package ticked, so power steering, power windows, power mirrors, cruise control, and a leather-wrapped wheel all came standard.

Just 1,500 made, each with its own number. Hardtop and automatic were the only options on the order sheet.

If you own one of these, you own a piece of Miata history.
