Exactly 110 years ago to the day, the Matawan Creek shark attacks took place killing two and injuring another on the same day.

Between July 1st and 12th, 1916 - a series of shark attacks shocked New Jersey but the most terrifying attacks happened in Matawan Creek that killed four people and critically injured one person.

This happened during a heat wave that drove thousands to the Jersey Shore.

A shark made its way from the ocean into the narrow, muddy creek… and attacked multiple people swimming there, killing an 11-year-old boy and a man who tried to rescue him.

Another 14-year old boy was attacked on the same day in the creek

A few days prior, two other shark attacks resulted in two deaths, one in Beach Haven and one Spring Lake

The attacks caused nationwide panic and are believed to have inspired the movie Jaws decades later

Officials say Marine Unit 2 was traveling south of Arthur Kill when a whale suddenly surfaced and struck the underside of the vessel’s stern, causing significant damage and rapid flooding.
