Matt Craig, Turner Brown Capture First Career Checkereds; Nasse, Finch, Reeves Capture Track Titles

Matt Craig has a resume of Late Model wins that would make any driver jealous.
Among Craig’s major wins are the All-American 400 in Nashville and the Florida Governor’s Cup in New Smyrna.
He has also won a Pro Late Model race at Five Flags Speedway in April 2021. But Craig was winless in the Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series, for Super Late Models, coming into the Busch Light Night of Champions on Saturday.
The 27-year-old driver from Kannapolis, N.C., sat on the pole following an invert and proceeded to lead every lap in the Busch Light 100.
“Thank the Good Lord, my dad, my family at home—a lotta money, a lotta effort to do this,” an elated Craig said. “We’ve struggled. It’s hard to get this win. But we’ve finally got it. The team put this thing on rails. It doesn’t get a whole lot better than this.”
Southern Super Series points leader Spencer Davis finished second and Jake Finch was third.
Craig bested a field that included Bubba Pollard (fourth-place), Stephen Nasse (seventh) and the father-son duo of Kevin and Keelan Harvick (ninth and fifth, respectively).
The elder Harvick, he of the Cup championship and 121 total wins across all NASCAR series, climbed as high as second. But with 34 laps to go, Kevin Harvick spun the tires on a restart and began leaking positions.
The younger Harvick, he of his daring and courageous performance en route to a Snowflake 125 win last December at Five Flags, sat in the middle of the pack for most of the night before making a late push into the top-five.
Nasse had a roller coaster night that ended on a high with his first career Blizzard Series track championship.
“It has been a long time coming for this one,” Nasse said. “I almost let it get away from us there.”
The 22-point lead he carried into the Busch Light 100 seemed in serious jeopardy when Nasse was collected in an accident on Lap 3. As he loves to do, though, Nasse made his way from the back of the pack and was back in the top-10 in 25 laps.
“It makes for a good show,” he said. “We had a glimmer of hope that didn’t work out, but it’s not for a lack of effort. The Anthony Campi team does such a good job on this car.”
Nasse is the sixth driver in Five Flags history to win both a Blizzard Series track title and a Snowball Derby crown, which he looks to defend come December. Eddie Mercer, Johanna Long, Chase Elliott, Dave Mader, Augie Grill and Stephen Nasse.
That’s some good company.

Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Model Series
Turner Brown didn’t get the memo that Five Flags Speedway takes some getting used to.
Then again, 15-year-olds probably have no clue what a memo is.
The teenager from Alma, Calif., aced his debut at the famed half-mile asphalt oval Saturday by winning the fourth and final Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Model Series 100.
Turner was fastest in qualifying (16.790 seconds) and led the final quarter of the race thanks to a world-class move to slide under then-leader Dustin Smith on Lap 76.
“It was a tough race,” Turner said. “There’s a lotta tire wear that happens here, so my team kept reminding me to save my tires.”
Friday’s practice was the first time Turner saw Five Flags up close. He has spent weeks preparing for Pensacola’s high banks virtually through iRacing, an online racing simulator for PC.
With two-time Snowball Derby polesitter Preston Peltier in his ear, Turner was ready for the moment coming out of a restart.
“When the competition caution came out, I knew it was my opportunity to strike,” Turner said. “I crossed (Smith) over in (Turn Nos.) 1 and 2 and drove away from there.”
He led by more than 4 seconds and had a full straightaway lead on runner-up Jake Finch and Smith in third just six laps from the checkered flag.
It was a strong first impression for someone to keep an eye on during the 59th annual Snowball Derby presented by FloSports.
“Hopefully, I’ll see the fans in December again,” Turner said.
Finch’s second-place finish clinched his second consecutive PLM track championship at Five Flags. He is just the fifth driver to win back-to-back titles—a list that includes Casey Roderick and D.J. VanderLey.
“Anytime you’ve been working all season long to win a championship it feels good,” Finch said. “It’s a testament to (car owner) Ronnie Sanders and everyone who works on this (No.) 18 car.”

BuggyWorx Crown Stocks
Robert Loper delivered a statement win at Saturday’s Busch Light Night of Champions.
The five-time Pure Stocks Snowball Derby winner captured the 25-lap BuggyWorx Crown Stocks feature and announced his presence for the Crown Stocks Derby festivities, which begin at Derby Preview Day on November 21.
“Wait until I get a motor like (other drivers). They’ll be in for something at the Derby,” Loper said. “It was a great race. We turned this (car) into something nice and it shows. We worked our butts off to get to where we are now.”
Zach Abdelwahed capped a magical season with a runner-up and Robert Barber rounded out the podium.
“This has been great season,” Abdelwahed said. “I learned a lot and I’m having a lotta fun.”
Loper won the night, but 26-year-old Austin Reeves captured the Crown Stocks track championship thanks to a dominating season that saw him win half of the division’s 10 features. He had nine top-five finishes.
Reeves lone finish outside the top-five came Saturday when he finished eighth. That result only came because another driver spun him five laps from the finish.

“My emotions are messed up right now. I don’t know what to say,” Reeves said. “I couldn’t have done this without (car owner) Spencer Bragg.”
