Why Self Storage Unit Insurance is Important:

When storing your valuables at a local self-storage facility, one important thing to keep in mind is why insurance for storage units is important.

Atlas Self Storage requires all customers to have some form of self-storage insurance to cover their rental unit. This insurance can be in a form you can purchase through us from a company we partner with, or you can also provide proof of insurance from your personal home owner’s insurance.

Insurance is never a fun subject, but one that’s extremely important to protect you. If a situation arises where one customer breaks the rules and stores things they were not supposed to and something like a fire breaks out, your valuables could be in danger.
Some things that could possibly happen could include but are definitely not limited to:
Customer negligence
Fire
Flood
Toxic chemical spill
Natural events such as hurricanes or tornadoes

We’re not in the insurance business. That’s not the product that we specialize in which is why we only partner with an insurance company to offer competitive rates and encourage you to bring in proof of coverage from your home owner’s insurance to get around that extra fee. We’re in the business of being the caretaker of what you value, so making sure every customer is covered is our central priority.

Packing and Moving in the Rain

Use plastic bins: Pack items in heavy-duty, waterproof plastic totes with tight lids instead of cardboard boxes, which turn soggy and tear when wet.

Dry items immediately: Wipe down furniture, metal tools, and plastic surfaces with old shop towels or microfiber cloths before putting them inside.

Protect large furniture: Wrap mattresses, couches, and wooden pieces in heavy plastic stretch wrap or waterproof furniture covers to shield them during transport.

Bring a recovery kit: Pack dry clothes, clean towels, and trash bags in your car so you can manage wet gear and shoes without dirtying the unit.

Protecting Your Unit Long Term

Elevate your belongings: Keep boxes and furniture off the concrete floor by using wooden pallets or plastic shelving.

Use moisture absorbers: Place desiccant packs, silica gel, or activated charcoal buckets inside your storage space to capture excess humidity.

Leave air gaps: Do not stack boxes flush against the walls; leave a small space for air to move around your items.

Avoid tight plastic covers on fabric: Skip tight plastic sheeting directly on cloth or leather items over long periods, as it traps ambient moisture and feeds mold; use breathable cloth covers instead.

Never put wet items into a self-storage unit. Rainwater trapped inside a dark, enclosed space quickly causes mold, mildew, and rust. If you must move or load your unit during a storm, dry every surface completely with towels before closing the door, use plastic bins instead of cardboard, and add moisture absorbers.
